Morris Dunne, chairman of ! the Oregon Kate unemployment compensation commission, said to- j day his stats has had "fine employ ment" throughout the winter and Oregon has a "hopeful, optimistic future." Dunne spoke at the conference of the Pacific area bureau of Inter governmental relations. Gov. Earl j Warren presided. Oregon, which has grown by 40 per cent in population since 1940, has begun to receive migrants from California, Dunne said. These are , largely attracted by work on various dam projects and the booming lum ber Industry. i Two years ago. 60.000 were em ployed In the lumber Industry. There are now 81,000. Oregon, Dunne said, bases a large ; part of her economy on Industries , which ship out of the state, prin cipally lumbering and agriculture, j The Marshall plan of sending aid to I Europe, he declared, will "Insure ! continued prosperity In Oregon," for ' that reason. 1 The state's returning veterans, he : reported, have caused little upset in ; the state's economy. I Of the 140.000 Oregonlans who joined the services, he said. 18.000 are now attending schools under the G.I. bill of rights, 67.000 received in itial checks under the readjustment : allowance, but only 1300 have ex- ! hausted their benefits under this ; allowance. Written for NBA Service All recent reports agree that the disease undulant fever, or brucel losis as it is sometimes called, is ex tremely common in the U. S.. This disease Is caused by a germ of which there are several varieties. The germ rf undulant fever is present in several different kinds of animals, especially cattle, hogs. sheep and goats. Human infections pre usually acquired from drinking the milk or coming In contact wltn the meat of these animals. Illness due to these germs Is us ually shown by fever, a chilly feel irg. excessive sweating, loss of weight, headache and muscular pains. Sometimes a rash, nose bleeds and other symptoms are piesent. The fever frequently goes up and down In a wave-like man ner or undulations, which has given the disease Its name. TKEATMEXT DIFFICCLT Undulant fever is likely to be chronic and long-continued and is rather difficult to treat in many in stances, although a great number of methods have been tried. Re certly a small group of patients have been treated with a combina tion of streptomycin and sulfa diazine and although it is too early fa The , ,.,.,..,.,tJa , ., Home of America'! Soviets May Alter Tactics WASHINGTON. April 33 VP. European communists may be com pelled to switch tactics as a result of their defeat in Italy. Officials studying this possibility said today that unless the commu nists are willing to resort to violence amounting to civil war they will, at the very least, hare to slow down their time table for political con' quest. Two possible moves by Russia enter Into speculation. One Is that the Kremlin may order a return to the early postwar efforts to form a common front with non-communist left wing po litical forces which in recent months the communists have at tacked bitterly. Another possibility and this one Is heavily but not entirely discount ed by authorities here Is that the Soviets may take the Initiative In seeking a meeting between Pre.il dent Truman and Premier Stalin. to be sure, the results seem prom ising. Pasteurization of all milk would greatly cut down on the number nf new cases of undulant fever. Some Infections are acquired from direct contact with animals, especially In pscKingnouse workers. Bcsmcs pasteurization and care In avoiding 'nfectlon from contact with Infected meat, the other most Important problem Is to eliminate the disease In he dairy Industry. which Is working hard to reduce in fection. It is estimated that between one In 10 and one In 100 of the Inhab itants of this country are Infected. The disease Is hard to conquer once person becomes infected and Is ore of our most Important health problems existing today. ' Note: Dr. Jordan Is unable to an swer Individual questions from readers.
