The market opened higher on accumulated overnight orders. Prices held around the opening levels (or the llrst two hours, when selling expanded. Corn was hit hardest and the May contract (ell 7 cents from Its earlier high. A mild recovery then started. Wheat closed H to 3 cents lower, May $2.504-, corn was 3 to 3 cents lower, May a..4-U, oats were S-lSa lower, May 1 1.16-Jl.lS, and soybeans were unchanged to higher, May (4.00. Wheat- May July Sept. Lively demand centered on a few Issues but modest improvement spread through a good section of the list. Several plvotals, including mo tors and some steels, were sluggish, with a number of sizable blocks changing hands. Total transfers tor the day ran to around 1.500.000 shares. Touching new 1948 highs, some on wide Jumps, were Plymouth Oil.' Warren Petroleum, Radio Corp. and New York Omnibus. Others holding fair gains included Stand ard Oil of Ohio, Curtiss-Wright, Douglas Aircraft, TJ. S. Rubber, Phelps Dodge. New York Central and Oliver Corp. Laggards were Oeneral Motors. Cerro de Pasco, J. L Case, Westinghouse Electric and Union Carbide. Bonds were mixed. Wheat at Chi cago closed down H a cent to 2 cents a bushel, corn off 2 to 3 and oats to IK lower. Vets Bonus Measure Filed SALEM, April 19 (AY-The India live measure to pay maximum $500 bonuses to veterans of World War II was filed with the state depart ment today. Yank Legion, a Portland vet erans' organisation, is Uie sponsor. The bonuses would amount to $18 lor each month of domestic serv ice, and $35 for each month of overseas service. They would be financed by a bond issue of up to 3 per cent of the assessed vnlua Uon of all property in the state.
