Heroic Truck Driver Wins
Praise For Saving Child
PORTLAND, April 17 Rescue of
tiny girl from drowning In the
black of night brought recognition
to a heroic Oregon truck driver In
Portland Friday night. Named
Driver of the Month and awarded a
gold, engraved wrlttwatch, Eldon
Ollllam, 30, of Scappooae, taved the
life of a child thrown from a ca
reening vehicle Into the water of a
drainage ditch near Ooehen on the
night of March 29.

Frank E. Landsburg, chairman of
the Portland traffic safety commis

known. The award ceremonies were
broadcast over station KOW In
Portland following a re-enactment
ot the rescue,
K. E. Phelster, Portland trucking
superintendent for Safeway, who
nominated Ollllam for Uie prize,
noted that the Incident would have
ended In tragedy had the driver be
come excited or given up in hi at
tempt to restore the child' breathing.
"It took forty-five minute of ar
tificial respiration to renew the
spark of life," Phelster aald.
Although Ollllam work out or
Portland, he live in Scappooae with
hla wife and two children. In 12
year of professional driving, he haa
been charged with only one minor
accident. By winning the March
Driver of the Month award, he be
comes one of the drivers eligible for
Oregon and national Driver of the
Year award.
The Oregon trucking Industry
presents a gold wristwatch each
month to an outstanding truck or
bus driver, chosen on Uie basis of
heroism, unusual courtesy, or re
markable contribution to safety.
The watchea are made available by
