Virtually sharing the coast league top roost were Los Angeles and San Diego. Figured game-wise. It was a three-way tie. but the Seals had 37-polnt bulge in the percentages. i Rip Collins' snappy Padres from San Diego bung a 10-inning defeat on the Seals, 4-3. as Los Angeles polished off Sacramento, 5-2, for the third straight night. j These were the only games play ed as rain took over at Seattle and Portland. The Padres took a two-one series lead oyer the Seals when Relief Pitcher Xavier Rescigno ran home with the winning run on an error in the first extra Inning. It was a weird game in which San Diego bobbled four times and the Seals five. LED GOING IN The Seals led 1-1 going into the ninth. A Padre walk and two singles tied the score, then with the bases loaded John Ritchey pinch hit a liner to Seal Relief Pitcher Dewey Soriano who dropped the ball long enough for Dain Clay to score, putting San Diego ahead. 1-3. The Seals tied it 3-3 in their half on no hits, filling the bases on errors. Dino Restelli scored when Lee Ranley's throw of a ball hit to him by Roy Nicely was wide at the plate. Los Angeles, primed by Bill Schuster's homer, poured four runs cross In the sixth frame to break a 1-1 tie, drove Marv Orissom to an early bath, and drop Sacra mento to seventh place behind idle Bollywood. Both Seattle and Portland will play doubleheaders tonight. CAR RACE DRAWS 67 ENTRANTS INDIANAPOLIS, April 16 WV-'Sixty-seven cars, the biggest entry list since 1831, had been nominated today for the 31st annual 500-mile nee at the Indianapolis motor speedway May 31. Speedway President Wilbur Shaw Mid he expected several other en tries postmarked before the dead line at midnight last night and the final total might equal the all-time high of 72 in 1931. "That means there will be a ter rific speed battle in the qualifying trials next month," Shaw said, "be cause only 33 of the fastest cars will be eligible to start the race (or cash prises of approximately $180,000." Sixteen entries were received to day in addition to 51 on hand when apeedy office closed yesterday. Four of the latest entries are new American-built cars, making at least 14 new cars in the race. i Training Camp Briefs Big Leaguers Begin Annual City Series BOSTON, April 16 iJP A series that many fans and some experts also think will be a preview of next fall's world series will begin at Braves field today when the Boston National Leaguers entertain the rival American League Red Sox. Three Washington and Oregon athletes will be in the starting lineup Wet Paths Cut Speed In Relays EUGENE, April 16 Rain, a heavy track and probably no record-breaking performances were in the scheme of things today as the 11th annual Hayward relays got un der way at , the University of Oregon. The yearly high school track I event founded and named by the late Colonel Bill Hayward of the Webfoots, may see one record broken, though in the attendance department. When the final per former of the two-day event is counted the total will be m the neighborhood of 800 boys. Class A schools are leading the way today. Medford's Black Torna do, champion last year and six times winner in the 10 years the relays have been run. naturally is favor ed. The Klamath Falls Pelicans are counted in the early figuring, but are not likely to upset Medford. The Tornado has permanent pos session of the Hayward relays No. 1 trophy, by virtue of winning the cinder classic three times in a row. and has one leg on the second trophy for last year's victory. Class B and class C schools take the track Saturday. Prom Southern Oregon. Ashland is competing in class B and Henley high of Klamath county is the de fending champion of class C. and a couple more are in the dug outs. The Braves will open with Sno homish's Earl Torgeson at first base and Seattle's Jeff Heath In left field: the Sox will have Johnny Pesky. Portland, at third base. Bobby Doerr. also of Portland and regular Red Sox second sacker. is sitting out the three game series with an ailing back, but Earl John son, Seattle pitcher, probably will toll in one of the clashes. The two teams have divided their only two meetings thus far. City series also will open in New York and Chicago today. The inter-league rivalries will be in full swing by tomorrow when the two St. Louis clubs and the Phila delphia teams'begin their sets. In New York it's a review of the 1947 world series with the Yankees entertaining the Brooklyn Dodgers in the first of three games.
