April 14 tP A four atate demand for a 50-day duck hunting season and increased bag limits was be.'ore the V. S. Fish and Wildlife service today. Sports groups, leaders and game commissions of Oregon. Washing ton, Idaho and Montana joined in the concerted action yesterday. The Joint demands were presented to Albert M. Day. director of the serv ice. In 1947 duck hunting was limited to two 15-day seasons with a daily bag limit of four birds. The new requests call for a con tinuous SO-dny season, or two 21 day periods, with an increase in bag limits to six a day. Dates of the season would be set by the Individual states. PAIR OF HONKERS Also requested are a two-day pos session limit, an open season on Jacksnlpe, and a four-a-day bag limit on geese with eight in pos session permitted. No more than twe of the dally bag could be Cana dian honkers. The sportsmen said they would seek the cooperation of California and Nevada in their joint program to make possible Pacific coast man agement of migratory waterfowl on a flyway basis rather than by zones. Such a proposal now is being con sidered bv a senate subcommittee. Lloyd McCants of Washington Duck Hunters. Inc.. and State Game Director Don Clarke said they will fly East tomorrow to ap pear before the senate group. FLYWAY BACKED The Oregon state game commis sion has backed the proposal to regulate migratory waterfowl by flyways rather than rones. The commission reported today that it has asked Oregon's con gressional delegation to support the bill before congress which would set up an advisory boarB to consult with the fish and wildlife service on seasons and bag limits and estab lish regulations for flyways instead of zones. 53 TRACK OUTFITS ENTERED ' Fifty-three Oregon high school Mlay teams, largest entry In the history of the event, will compete in the annual Hayward relays this week-end at the University of Ore gon track. The "A" division, which Included Klamath Falls Pelicans and the Medford team from Southern Ore gon, runs Friday. There are 22 en tries In the class. Divisions "B" and "C" 18 of the first and 13 of the latter have their innings on Saturday. Henley high school, coached by Max Marvin, is defending the title gained last year in class "C." Marvin is still holding tryouts at Henley for his track squad and probably will field a very green out fit at Eugene. The weather hts hampered any outdoor work for the Hornets. Medford's Black Tornado will be defending In class "A" and by virtue of early and decisive triumphs over all Southern Oregon opponents, will be a favorite to come out ahead In the Hayward. Approximately 700 athletes will cavort during the two-day meet. The Hayward relays were founded In 1937, with six teams entered, by the late Colonel Bill Hayward. vet eran track coach, who died last winter. Vandals List Bruin Game MOSCOW. Ida., April 14 iPt The University of Idaho's 1948 foot ball schedule listed six Pacific Coast conference opponents today with the addition of the University of California at Los Angeles. The Vandal-Bruin clash, an nounced last night, will be played In the Los Angeles coliseum, October 2. A previously scheduled game, with Willamette university was dropped to make way for the California jaunt. Athletic officials said they would negotiate for a Willamette game In 1949 or 1950. Other Coast conference opponents on the Vandal schedule include the four Oregon and Washington schools and the University of Montana. J., April 14 ( Red Barrett, who must have a good season if the Boston Braves hope to win the pennant, was named to start today against the Newark Bears. The contest is the Tribe's last road exhibition of the spring. Bob Elliott, most valuable National leaguer in 1947. is in a batting slump and probably won't play. LEXINGTON. N. C. April 14 iP The Philadelphia Athletics con tinued their Journey northward to day, stopping off here for a night game with their Lexington farm of the class D North Carolina State league. Lou Brissie was the whole show yesterday as the A s stopped Atlanta. 6-0. Brissie gave up four hits, made two himself, struck out five and walked one. The rookie is up from Savannah of the South Atlantic circuit. HOVSTON. Tex., April 14 lP Pitcher Hank Wyse and Catcher Clyde MrCullough of the I'hirato Cubs were on the injured list to day. Wyse has an aching shoulder and McCullough has rib pains. The Cubs Untied with the St. Louis Cardinals again with Harry Brecheen due for the Red Birds. SUn Musial notified Cardinal Manager Eddie Dyer that he will rejoin the club in Little Rock Thursday. He has been visiting his sick father in Donora. Pa. BROOKLYN. April 14 i.-Pi Leo Durocher made his first official ap pearance in a Brooklyn uniform at Ebbets field today since the 1946 sea son as his Dodgers met the Montreal Royals. The Dodgers have a two game set with the Royals and then meet their first major league op position of the spring when the New York Yankees visit Friday and Saturday. KANSAS CITY. April 14 iA' Manager Ted Lyons surveyed his Chicago White Sox today and ob served that "the boys are in pretty good shape for the opener with the Tigers." Joe llaynes will probably be the opening pitcher. He won none and lost two against Detroit in 1947 and has a lifetime record of 6-8 against the dub. They preler a sys tem giving the credit to players who score and drive in rum rather than to those who have succeeded in hitting safely. The present system is arrived at by dividing the player's hits by of ficial times at bat. This arrange ment enabled Harry Walker of. Philadelphia to become the No. 1 man In the National league and Ted Williams of Boston the tou man in the American loop last season. Scoffers of this system argue that the batting average does not dictate the true worth of the player. It does not tell the entire story. While Walkers StS3 led all Na tional league batters, the Phillies' outfielder ranked 53rd In runs bat ted In and 19th In runs scored. C. A. Lockwood, state game super visor, said a planting boat virtually a floating livebox was roped to a McKenzie river boat. A man in the stem of the river boat dipped fish out of the planting boat as they moved down stream- He said the method was designed to reach areas inaccessible to tank trucks and to give an even distri bution of big trout throughout the heaviest fished parts of the stream. Approximately 50.000 marked na tive spring rainbows ranging from six to over 20 inches will be plant ed In the river this season. About 24.400 from 6 to 8 inches, with the left ventral fin clipped off. will be placed between Leaburg dam and the Paradise recreation area: an other lot of 6700. which has been at the hatchery for two years, will be liberated from the town of Blue River to 12 miles upstream. Both their ventral belly fins and the small fin immediately in front of the tail have been clipped. The largest trout about 1000 of them will be marked with a small metal tag clamped to the left side of the lower jaw. They are 6 years old and are 15 to 23 inches long. In an effort to remedy the July Women Slate Monkey Golf A "monkey" golf tournament is on the schedule of the women of Reames for Friday a nine-hole af fair starting at 10 a. m. Pairings will be made at number one tee. This tourney will be played in foursomes, with each member of the foursome selecting her favorite club and using it throughout, taking shots in rotation. Each foursome will play one ball. Because there Is a strong proba bility that putting will be done with seven-irons, etc., the scores are not expected to be low.
