As a result, automobile dealers all over the country hove been subjected to criticism from some of those who have not been able to get new cars. We have just completed the first quarter of the year . . . which makes this a good time to have a look at the facts. As nearly as can bo estimated right now . . . the produc tion af new automobiles during this quarter of the year was approxi mately nine hundred and forty thousond. An estimated sixty-five thou sand were for foreign buyers. This left around eight-hundred and seventy-five thousand for distribution to the new car dealers of the United States. ' Now, of course, that's a lot of cars. They'd really make quite on impressive parade if you could see them rolling along one after an other. So, in a way, it's not surprising that many persons become re ontful when they hear about the large volume of new cars now being manufactured. A lot of them quite naturally exclaim: "With all the new cars coming out these days, there surely ought to be enough for everybody " But the point which many people do not seem to under stand is that these eight hundred and seventy-five thousand new auto mobiles have to be distributed to forty thousond new car dealers. And this means an average of only about twanty-one new cars to a dealer. Yes, that enormous volume of production for the first three months of the year . . . amounting to nine hundred and forty thousand automobiles . . . will only give the new car dealers of the United States an average of twenty-one cart apiece to distribute to their customers . . . and that boils down to just seven cars a month. So, necessarily, a great many persons who want new cars have to be disappointed. In fact, there are about six million of them ... for the new car dealers of the country have orders for at least that many automobiles that they are unable to deliver. The manufacturers have been doing everything in their power to get new cars rolling along in sufficient quantity to take core of every one. Naturally, it's to their own financial advantage to do so. And the new car dealers of the country . . . with their average of only seven rars a month coming from the factories.. . . are doing a very creditable job, too. Another point is that with the continuing gasoline shortage, car-owners should taka every precaution to see that their motors are properly adjusted to give maximum mileage on the least possible amount of gosolinc Carburetor adjustment, proper timing and an engine tune up are the most important points to have checked in your efforts to sove fuel. And, in view of tho continuing car shortage, you can prolong the life of your present automobile by keeping it in good repair at ell times, and, mcanwhilo, assure economy of operation, better performance, and above all, greater safety.
