st the board of trade today.
Advances and declines were moderate. Announcement by the com
modity credit conwratlon that It had purchased 610.000 bushels of
wheat yesterday gave wheat reason for a mild advance, but this was
offset bv report of good progress In European crops.
At the close wheat was to m lower Mian yesterdays finish. May

generally got another leg up on
recovery today, although many
market leaders were more or less
Indifferent.
Prices hardened telecttvely after
considerable forenoon Irregularity.
Assorted oils, rails and Industrials
were ahead fractions to around 3
points near the close.
Dealings grossed the million-mark
for the 12th session In three weeks
although slowdowns were frequent.
Volume ran to around 1.300.000
shares.
A few strong carriers enabled the
rail average to touch another new
high since September, 1946.
At best levels for 1948 were Nickel
Plate Railroad, Union Pacific, Ca
nadian Pacific. Pure Oil and Gil
lette Safety Razor.
Attracting bids were Bethlehem
Steel, General Motors. D. 8. Rub
ber, Montgomery Ward. Boeing, Pa
oific Telephone (In response to a
rate boost), and Southern Pacific
Bonds maintained a steady course.
Commodities backed water. Cotton,
toward the finish, was off 40 cents
to $1.45 a bale. At Chicago wheat
ended down to 1 li ceuts a bushel,
corn 1 to IS and oats 1H to IS.

Body Found
In Pit River
ALTURAS. April 6 The body of
Fred Bailey. 73-year-old retired
rancher, was found late Monday
floating in the Pit river near Al
turas. Immediately back of the home
of Modoc county District Attorney
Charles Lederer.
Officers today are trying to de
termine whether Bailey died a na
tural death or was murdered.
Mrs. Agnes Wall of Alturas spot
ted the man's body In the river
about 5:30 p. m.
A mark on the man's head may
indicate that he was struck a heavy
blow and Lederer said that Bailey
may have been dead when his body
w-ent into the river. There was no
water in his lungs to Indicate death
bv drowning.
An autopsy was being performed
today In an effort to determine
cause of death.
Bailey was an old-timer around
Alturas and used to run a ranch.
Witnesses who might know how
long his bodv had been In the river
were being sought.

beard, always an unwelcome visitor,
was outdistanced during the month
of March by the stork who left
119 births as compared to 26 deaths.
The number of binhs was heaviest
since last September when 123
bebies were left. March babies In
cluded 55 males. 64 females, one pair
of twins and one set of triplets. The
twins expired as did one of the trip
lets, according to the month end
report from the Klamath county
