O., March 31 Two weeks of heckling by itoiws nd telephone calls were climaxed last night by the ilormlnit of the home of a elf-proclalmed com munist leader. A orowd of 300 watched and cheered 30 or 40 persons who broke Into Uie Kouthslde hoiue occupied bv Frank Haahmall. 28-year-old former New York collese aiudenU He. hts wile and child were absent. Before police came to read Uie riot act, the gang broke all Die windows and much of the furniture, but left untouched four bookcases filled with communist and other literature. Sheriff Ralph Paul announced he planned to see If Haahmall, who calls himself executive secretary of 'ranklln county (Columbus) com munists, could be declared a public menace and forced to leave town. Hashmall refused to talk to re porters about the Incident. He came here two week ago and announced his position In public statements. Newspapers smoked out his telephone number, but one paper published It with the wrong ex change. The owner of that telephone complained It was ringing all the time and every time he answered he got abuse. Hashmall and a small group of followers attempted to pass out communist literature at the Timken Holler Bearing company last week. Timken workers tore up the pam phlet. Police prevented rlolence. Truman Asks "American" Show WASHINGTON. March SI (P) President Truman Tuesday asked for widespread observance of Sun day, May 16, at "I Am an American Day." He said in a proclamation that foreign and domestic problems fac ing the nation "require unselfish devotion and united effort on the part of all our citizens." "Loyalty to a great ideal has brought together people of every race, creed, and culture all blended Into a unity which has been the strength of our country and has enabled it to meet every crisis," he added. Power Rate Boost Gets Okay SALEM, March 31 tPi Public Utilities Commissioner John H. Carkin today authorized the Ukiah Electric company to increase its rates $1 per month for each of its 80 customers. The company Is located in Ukiah, Southern Umatilla county. A ma jority of the company's customers asked for the rate Increase to offset increased oil prices. The company does not make a profit The company's secretary-treasurer gets a salary of $25 a month, and Its maintenance man-operator gets $1$ a month. Southern Pacific Places Order For Freight Cars Southern Pacific Is placing orders would be In service by the end of now lor SMio new ireignt tram ci, , juiy. Merrier, president ot the railroad, who pointed out Uiat Uie new orders w ill raise to 19.3S0 Uie number of freight train cars Southern Pacific has ordered since Uie end of Uie war. Of 10.760 freight cars on previous postwar orders, 7251 had been delivered by the end of February, and It was expected all freight cars on these earlier orders Chinese Flee Chahar Area PEIPINO. March 31 iJV-Chinese communist troops streamed out ot Southern Chahar province. Inner Mongolia. Tuesday, under air at tack, government reports said. The main communist force, the dispatches added, already has crossed the Sankan river in a march toward hill bases in Hopeh province west of Uie Pelplng-Paotlng rail way. The withdrawal followed a government counteroffensive. The Catholic newspaper. Social Welfare, reported many communist soldiers conscripted in Southern Chahar surrendered with Uieir arms. It said Uie communist cam paign there had ended but that guerrilla bands remained active. Dispatches said government troops from Tatung, 150 miles west ot Peiping and Fengchen. Northern Shansl railtown. had joined, further easing Uie situation around Tatung. Earlier, a plane was chartered to evacuate 25 missionaries from Ta tung. Peiping sources predicted a big battle there within a few days. NaUonal planes spotted several thousand reds moving southward from the railway between Tatung and Kalgan, 116 miles northwest of Peiping. The freight cars now being or dered Include 3350 box cars, 1000 drop bottom gondolas with wood sides, 1000 all-steel drop bottom gen eral service gondolas. 700 tight bot tom gondolas, 2100 flat cars and 350 covered hopper cars, President Mer cier said. Deliveries of box cars and general service gondolas are sched uled to begin In August and Septem ber, and deliveries for other types are to start before the end of tins year, in addition to the new freight car program. Southern Pacific's freight service equipment has been aug mented In the postwar period by receipt of 20 powerful Diesel-electric main line freight locomotives, with 20 more remaining on order: and its fleet of Diesel-elect rlc switchers has been increased to 162. with 20 more still to be delivered, it was stated. DAY Auxiliary Gives To OVS Fund OVS. March 31 The Disabled American Veterans' auxiliary has contributed t25 to Oregon Vocat ional school. The contribution has been added to the OVS student loan fund and was presented to Uie school by Mrs R. W. Lowry. commander, and Inez Skeen, treasurer. TVA Power Up Plan Asked WASHINGTON. March 31 i.-n President Trun.an today directed the Tennessee valley authority to draw up plans for Increasing" the power output for emergency needs. He instructed TVA Chairman Gordon R. Clapp to draft a program looking toward a vast new supply of electricity for aluminum, chem ical and oUier defense plants. Chairman Edwin O. Nourse of the president's council of economic ad visers and Chairman Arthur M. Hill of the naUonal security resources board sat in with Clapp at a White House conference. Nourse said Mr. Truman was "deeply concerned" that there be an adequate power program to supply the needs for electricity. Aluminum, the vital necessity for the plane building program, uses a vast amount of electricity. Estate Tops $25,000 Mark Value of the estate of the late Sheldon Brumbaugh. Klamath Falls architect. Sheriff Harold Hinshaw reported the tractor, apparently taken to haul a mired car onto dry ground near Lake Campbell, had been driv en over and crushed a box contain ing several sticks ot dynamite and 80 caps. De Soto Joins SF School Staff SAN FRANCISCO Alex De Soto, formerly with the staff of the Seat tle Star and more recently an in structor at Klamath Union high school, has Joined the Instructing staff of the college of business ad ministration of the University of San Francisco. De Soto's appointment was an nounced by Roy C. Hall, dean of the college. He will head classes in busi ness English and letter writing dur ing the university's summer session, and continue full time at the start of the fall semester.
