Fla.. March 29 Wl George Vico. a husky young man from California's San Fernando valley, who got his early training at Portland, looks like Detroit's new first baseman. ' The Tigers have been stabbing for a, capable first sacker ever since they sold Rudy York to Boston in January, 1946. Hank Greenberg was called back from the outfield to play iirst In 1946. Last year they tried Roy Cullenbine, a stop-gap per former. This spring It has been Vico and Paul Campbell, a pocket sized fancy dan who understudied York at Bos ton when they won the flag two fears ago. :vico has been playing most of the spring games, hitting an occasional long ball and fielding his position ' flawlessly. He is only 23 years old. "It looks like we'll go along with Vico," said Manager Steve O'Neill. "He seems to hit a longer ball and he's seven years younger t h a n j Campbell. Of course, if it turns out that he can't hit, we'll have to try something else." After three years in the navy, Vico returned to baseball. The Tigers shifted his contract to Port land of the Pacific Coast league,' which, in turn, optioned him to Salem of the Western International ; league, class B. He played half a : year at Salem and half at Portland, hitting .286. I Last year he "arrived" at Portland : under Jim Turner, former big league I pitcher. At Portland he hit .307. batting in 64 runs. His extra base total in- eluded 28 doubles, seven triples and ; nine homers. ! This young giant, 6 feet 4. and : 200 pounds, can pull the ball to right with authority. A left-handed hitter, he deposited one of Bucky Walter's soft pitches over the right field wall at the 375-foot mark In a recent exhibition staged at Tampa. Longden Aiming For 3000th Saddle Win SAN MATEO. STOJACK GETTING CROWDED Decisively beaten last week by Georges Dusette. Frankie Stojack Is being crowded Into a comer by Promoter Mack Lillard for 'another championship bout. Stojack will be on -tim coming Friday's wrestling card, but will not be putting his Pacific Coast Junior heavyweight belt up. However, he has agreed to a title match with Dusette later on. perhaps next week. Opponent this week for Stojack will be lithe Frankie Hart, who re cently failed in a try after Tacoma Frank's crown. Hart Joins a grow ing list of others who have also failed. The match will be called for five rounds. Also listed for five chapters Is a bout putting Dusette in with Joe Dorsetti. -and the two fights will be termed a double main event to make all contestants happy. Dorsetti holds the Pacific Coast 175-pound belt but since grapplers of that weight are rather scarce, he doesn't have someone clamoring for a defense every week like Sto jack does. The race was for three-year-olds and upwards, five furlongs, a claim ing affair, and Johnny brought Hugo K. Archer home in front by three lengths in 1:05 25 over a .slow track. Eight horses contested the race and the winner was entered to be claimed for 1300 with a purse of $280 to the winner. It proved to be the only winner that Longden rode in 1927. He had but 16 mounts that season: won one. was second twice and third four times. His mounts earned the sum total of $600 that year. Longden has ridden 15 derby vic tors, and when he takes the saddle for the California Derby at Bay Meadows April 10, he may up the sparkling record to 16. Despite the fact that Longden, English-born pilot from Wakefield, Yorkshire, has been riding since 1927, his best year was 1947. when his winning percentage was 24.
