Newspaper Page TextPACE EICHT HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON FRIDAY, MARCH 26, 1948 Full Athletic Slate OK For OVS Owls Hilltop School Will Start With Football A full-scale collegiate major athletic program has been okayed for Oregon Vocational school, starting next foil. The final stamp of approval on a deal which has been cooking for the post several months was placed this week by the state board of education. , That means that the Oregon Vocational school Owls will compete with colleges of com parable size in football, basketball, track and baseball. The most immediate problem is scheduling, ond letters went out yesterday afternoon from the office of Winston Purvine, OVS director, to a long list of the smaller Pacific coast colleges in an effort to line up football games. Football being first on the agenda, it gets first attention. The Owls will not compete In truck or baseball tills spring, but will call out gridiron aspirants about the latter part of next August. It's rather late to start scheduling grid games, but Purvine is contact ing such schools as Southern Oregon college, Eastern Oregon. Linlield. Chtco State, Humboldt State, Cali fornia Aggies. San Francisco State and others. He hopes to get eight games. A natural set-up would be entry Into the Far Western athletic con ference, along with Southern Ore gon, and that might be arranged later. Right now and perhaps for next football season, the Owls will be unattached. FOLLOW AAU Rl'LKS Even though non - conference, Purvine said the Owls w ould comply with AAU rules of eligibility. At present there are some 485 men stu dents on the hill and some 60 of them have played at least two years of high school football and want more action. If the campus offers football, more students are bound to come. Home games, scheduled so as not to conflict with Pelican dates at Modoc field, could beplayed under the lights of the higfi school grid iron. Arnold Cralapp, city school superintendent, said that the high school board was in full accord with the idea of letting the Owls use Modoc field. 'For practice, OVS will clear a broad flat space on the campus be tween the main gate and gymnasium building, a field the Marines use for minor sports. Student body fees will be used for basic financing of the athletic teams. Bl 1LDING BUS The matter has progressed to where shop classes at OVS are plan ning to mount a bus body on a truck chassis to be used in athletic transportation. The first year of collegiate com petition might be a little rough, Purvine believes, jumping Into full scale college play without any back ground, but the first step must be taken at the bottom and eventually the Owls may rank right up with the best schools of its size In athletics. As a sidelight, OVS probably will be in the market for a coaching staff about now. Pre-Season Work At Meadows Gets Going PORTLAND. March 26 Plans for the mid-May opening of Port land Meadows race course shifted into high gear today with the arrival of Gen. Mgr. William P. Kyne and his staff to prepare the Multnomah county turf plant for its forthcom ing session of thoroughbred racing. Work on the Installation of the new American totalizator system, involving automatic pari-mutuel machines and a new and improved type tote board, began Monday at the only major race track operating at night in the United States. The American tote has been in use on the California "big apple'1 circuit for the past several seasons and Is a great improvement over the board used in the Northwest in previous years. Applications for stall space for more than 800 thoroughbreds have already been received by Thomas, and half that number again are expected to be turned in by owners and trainers presently campaigning at Bay Meadows. By Annual Shifts Made In Casaba Rule Book MEN'S CITY KEG FINALS ON TONITE The men's city bowling tourna ment gets rolling tonight at Recrea tion alleys, with team events first on the firing line. Twenty-nine five-man teams are qualified for the kegling. 13 of them in class A with compiled averages of 825 pins or over. The other 16 are in class B. Team play will continue on through tomorrow night: doubles and singles rolling will come Mon day and Tuesday nights. Some 160 local bowlers will take part in the individual and doubles work, competing for both A and B class prizes and all that roll in team piny as well as doubles and singles : will put their nine-line totals up for all-events prizes. ! Award lists include cash prizes. ; championship trophies and many j merchandise awards donated by i merchants all over town. The awards ' will be presented Tuesday night i when the tourney ends. ' The women's city tournament will ' be run Thursday and Friday, April . 1 and 2. Twelve teams and over 60 bowlers are entered in that playoff. : Tops Marbles Meet ' Benjamin Sklar, a 12-year-old lad from Pittsburgh, Pcnn.. won the championship in the 1947 national ; marbles tournament. NEW YORK. March 26 i.J The college basketball rule book is un dergoing its annual face-lifting, but there's this consolation for the fans: The sport will still look like basketball. The four rules adopted by the National Collegiate Basketball com mittee yesterday and the others still under consideration are large ly of a minor and technical nature. Their purpose seems to be streamline and to clarify. These are the new regulations the committee approved: 1. A coach can talk to his team at the bench during Intermission and timeouts. This makes coaching from the bench unnecessary. 2. Substitutes can enter the game merely by reporting to the score keeper. All the referee has to do is recognize the player and say, "come on." 3. A player who Is charged with a foul must raise his hand so the spectators can see. 4. All jump balls must be made at the nearest of three six-foot circles. This is to prevent scrambl ing for positions around the side lines. The proposed rules changes still under consideration include those dealing with a uniform backboard and modification of the three-min ute rule. Some coaches favor making pen alties for fouls in the last three minutes more severe to prevent wild contention for the ball. At Oroville the Red Sox are calling for players who want to nuikc a stab at the hometown team. The Red Sox will train at San Jose and the club will pay expenses of boys coming out. One thing about this Far West league. It's new and doesn't have a backlog of holdover players, so the clubs aren't turning down anyone who has a baseball gleam in his eye.
