Id boy beln held In technical eustody today after, Snohomish County Sheriff Tom Warnock said, ho shot and fatally wounded a man who waa beatinz hli mother. The sheriff ldrntlfled the victim is Thomas O. Vreeland, 27, a laborer. He died In Providence hospital last nlRht irom effects of a M caliber rifle bullet fired Into his chest. Warnock aald the boy, Charles Rimer, and his mother, Mrs. Allyne Larson, 35, told him the shooting followed a parly at a neighbor's home. Warnock said they told this story: Vreeland bet an annoying Mrs. Larson and she left to escape his attentions. Several hours later Vreeland appeared at her home and began pounding on the door for ad mittance. The boy warned him to leave but Vreeland forced the door open and entered. Vreeland struck Mrs. Larson and again the boy warned him to leave or he would shoot. Vreeland then swung at young Rimer and the boy fired one shot, Warnock said. As Vreeland col lapsed to the floor, Mrs. Larson telephoned the sheriff's office, then rushed to a neighbor's home for help. The sheriff said the boy was re leased in the technical custody of his attorney, pending an inquest. "I think the government could save money that way," he told a reporter. "It would be cheaper to give them the Insurance than to pay out what it costs us to collect the premiums." Shafer said the Joint army-navy personnel board already has ap proved the principle of free in surance for men and women on active military duty. He said the secretaries of the army and navy are expected to sub mit recommendations on the matter soon to the house armed services committee. Shafer said his subcom mittee will take prompt action on the proposal. "The present national service life insurance is unduly expensive, and socialistic in Implication," Shafer said. Frantic efforts of the parents. Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth Waterhouse, were futile as the flames flashed through the two-story frame dwell ing. The children were sleeping in up stairs rooms. The parents, three sons, and the wife of one of the latter, sleeping downstairs, escaped. Two other chil dren were away from home. ' The dead: Betty Jean, 16.
