WEDNESDAY, FED, 23, 1948 HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON TRANSPORTATION NEWS ,ri,r.i ii i iiwwwm "The Hobo Basket," well known to railroad men throughout the country lnce 1U start early In Jnmi iry in Birmingham, Ala., should reach the Orcat Northern here by the end ol thla week and crew mem bers will have a chance to affix their names to the already lengthy scroll and make their contributions to the March of Dimes, "The Hobo Basket" originated with three yard clerks on the South ern Railway in Birmingham and after going the rounds there was sent on the road like a boomer way bill. Each crew member, where "The Hobo Basket" made a stop, added his name to the scroll and passed 11 along. From the Southern Railway the basket went to the Frisco line, the Rock Island, C & NW, Milwau kee, Duluth South Shore, will come to the Oreat Northern, the SP&S. Oregon Trunk, on to the Western Pacific, Southern Pacific and to the Santa Fe. From there the basket travels along the Fort Worth and Denver City, the St. Louis South western, the Yaxoo and Mississippi Valley, over the Chesapeake and Ohio before going home to Birming ham. As "The Hobo Basket" makes Its rounds, contributions will roll up lor the March of Dimes and at the end of the line, which Is the bas ket' home yard at the Southern Railway, gifts will be counted and the entire sum sent to the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. First appearance of the basket In the GN's Klamath division will be at Bend. News of Interest here to GN men is appointment of John Budd as president of the Chicago and East em Illinois. Young Budd was here a number of years ago with his fam ily when he was with the Great Northern's Klamath division. Budd was due for the general manager ship of the GN about a year ago but was offered the Chicago and East ern Illinois presidency and took that Instead. His family has moved from St. Paul, where they were during war years when Budd was In Africa with the engineering corps, to a new home in Chicago. G t o r g e Suprenant, conductor brakeman for the GN who suffered painful injuries to his foot while working at Malin on January 9, writa from Ashbury hospital In Minneapolis that he Is getting along and anticipating surgery which Is scheduled soon on his foot. Mrs. Suprenant is with her husband. Mrs. C. C. Edwards of 2940 La Vcrne, wife of a GN carman, was called to Libby, Mont, recently by the serious Illness of her motlicr. A recent GN visitor was Coleman Nell of Everett, Wash., assistant to the master carpenter at Everett, who has been assisting Division Engin eer W. L. Solga during the past week.
