But, says Coach Floyd Millet, they knew last summer they would be if they won the Mountain States conference championship. And their sights are set instead on the Metro politan Invitational tournament. Coach Vadal Peterson of Utah university, chairman of the district NCAA selection committee, said he received official notice last night from the national rules committee chairman barring the Cougars from consideration despite the fact they have Just about cinched the Moun tain States pennant. Use of Guard Brady Walker, a fifth year man, barred Brigham Young from consideration, under a ruling of Dr. Hugh Willett of Los Angeles, chairman of the NCAA ml . committee, Peterson said. WARTIME RULE Walker was played under wartime conference rules still in effect NCAA eligibility rules limit players to four years of competition. "It may be that the Brigham Young player was allowed to play under its conference ruling for the year, although he wasn't in the serv ice set up," Cassill said. "Nichols has two years at USC under the navy V-6 program and he's eligible under the NCAA as far as we know." Negro Loops Still Trying NEW YORK, Feb. 24 UP) The negro National and American Base ball leagues still held out hope to day that they would gain admission to organized baseball. But as recently as last Decem ber they were "turned down cold." the Rev. John J. Johnson, president of the Negro National league, de clares. The Rev. Johnson said In a statement that formal applications of both circuits were turned down by the National Association of Minor Leagues at the Miami meet ing to December. He also reported both loops were In a "precarious situation" be cause of the drawing power of Jack ie Robinson and other negroes now playing in the majors.
