Wheat led the advance which carried the bread cereal several cents above the preceding close. There was no news development to account for the late buying. Brokers said It was mostly short-covering prior to the long week-end closing. The market will not be open Monday, Washington's birthday. Private cables from Europe said weather was very cold. Little fear f crop damage was expressed, however, because moderate to heavy now has fallen to protect the crops. Wheat closed 2S to 6 cents higher, May 3 35 -12.36. corn was 114-34 higher, May 2.11-.12. Oats were -l" higher. May fl.OSH K, and soybeans were H lower to ' higher, March 3.32'. There was a little further short covering for the lengthy week-end. Major markets will recess Monday in observance of Washington s Birthday. Customers, on the whole, gave Wall street a wide berth and boardrooms were virtually deserted. Those who appeared still main. tained a cautious attitude. There was a certain amount of nibbling for a technical comeback. Accounts were trimmed by those still skeptical regarding economic situations at home and abroad, taxes, labor and commodity fluctuations. Volume for the two hours was in the neighborhood of 250,000 shares. Bonds were steady. Q rains ex hibited considerable nervousness.
