II PACE 4 Need Seen For Shark Protection BAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 19 W The plight of the shark, big vlt-mln-A producer. Ij causing concern to West Coast fisheries experts. Along with other commercial ocean species, the problem of dwindling shark populations was studied today oy more than a score of fisheries biologists from wash' lr.gton, Oregon and California. The shark Is a big business. The aoupfln's liver, rich in vlUmln-A, brings 10 a pound. Marine biologists say the shark, particularly tilt soupfln, art badly In need of protection. Just One Phase The shark was Just one phase of the West Coast's multi-million dol lkt fisheries industry under study In the current preparation of pro gram for the Pacific marine ustv cries commission. Biologists say some of the fish population is doing well. This In cludes crab, increasing in number despite growing commercial hauls. Salmon are doing well In Cali fornia, but 'he catch has been de clining in Oregon and Washington. The biologists hope to pool in formation and evolve methods on Pacific fish problems which ulti mately may become Interstate fish eries regulations. Hetch Hetchy Water Low SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 19 tP) The lowest water level In the his tory of the Hetch Hetchy reservoir endangers San Francisco's power supply, city officials said Wednes day. As a result of the California diought the city's powerhouses at Mocassin dam may have to be shut down within the next 15 days. Utilities Manager James H. Tur ner described the drought in the Sierra, Nevada, source of the city's Ketch Hetchy supply, as "extremely serious." Only 12.000.000.000 gallons of Water remain in storage at Hetch Hetchy. The reservoir capacity is 117. 300.000,000 gallons. At this time last year, Hetch Hetchy had 40,000. 000,000 gallons, and that was an un usually dry year. Assistant U. S. Forester Dies PORTLAND, Feb. 19 UPi F. V. "Jack" Horton, 59, assistant re gional United States forester, died at his home early Wednesday. He had been with the forest ser vice since 1911, serving in the Uma tilla, Wallowa, the one-time Wena hit, and Rogue River national forests as assistant before becoming super visor of Columbia national forest. He came here in 1930 as assistant in the region and had an active part in construction of Timberline lodge. Survivors Include the widow and two daughters, Mrs. Robert Tarrant, Portland, and Mrs. Thomas Steffen, Pullman. 1948 "Futuromic" Oldsmobiles Long Time Grain Trader Passes PORTLAND, Feb. 19 (IP) Hugh A. Martin, 65, who had been con nected with the Northwest gram trade for 37 years, died Tuesday night at his home here. In 1911 he was employed by the Walla Walla Farmers agency and in 1917 joined the department of agri culture's grain branch here. Later he was with Kerr-Gilfford tt, company, then returned to the department of agriculture with whose market news service he was connected at the - time of his death. Feb. 19 tPr A pre-dawn mercy dash over roads state patrolmen said were "virtually impassable in patches" Wednesday was credited with saving the life of 18-months-old Dennis Hallett, stricken with diphtheria. The race began at 1:30 a. m. when State Patrolman Roy Betlach left Spokane with a supply of anti-toxin requested by Ritzville General hos pital Betlach said during the trip the wheels of his state patrol car at times were nearly buried in mud. At other points, snow and ice covered the highways. Betlach arrived at Ritzville early Wednesday and the anti-toxin was administered to the Infant At tendants said the child was respond ing to the treatment. Feb. 19 iP) The engineer of the Tidewater - Sharer tug Viking was lost overboard in the Columbia river in a storm Monday night, the coast guard said Wednes day in a belated report. He was O. F. Read, 44, Vancouver, Wash. The master, John Rosen berg of The Dalles, said Read was last seen when the tug was near Thirteen Mile rapids below Hood River.
