The official, from the prefecture of nearby Toulon, Mid no bodie had been recovered. He said the officers of the carrier did not know whether the men drowned or merely failed to report back from in ore leave. The French press agency earlier said 16 bodies had been recovered. The Toulon official siild he believed his version was more exact. The official added that the sea was very rough when the sailors were return ing in the early morning hours Irom a party ashore. (In London, the U. S. navy said eight men were unaccounted lor" In figures still subject to revision.) The French news agency earlier said 40 men were missing after the launch went down. The Midway has a complement of 3500 men. Accounts of how the accident v eurred were not immediately clear. Most reports said the launch was carrying from 160 to 200 men. One said the launch hit a pyramid of stones, throw ins 1' the mm into the water. Men Jumped J Another said mat when water poured into the craft some of the sailors jumped into the water, but that the launch continued along to the 45,000-ton carrier. The French news agency said the launch struck an obstruction and sank. The men were returning from a casino at the small island of Hyeres, off the Riviera. The Midway is anchored off another of the small islands in the Hyeres group. The Midway, which the Vnlted 8Ules has maintained in the Mediterranean for several months, was paying a courtesy call to the French Riviera. . Hyeres is east of Toulon. The small Hyeres islands are just south of here. The navy department in Wash ington announced last month that the Midway was to be withdrawn from .-Mediterranean duty . about March 15 and replaced by the 37.000 ton carrier Philippine Sea. The Midway, the announcement said, is to undergo extensive alternations. Including strengthening of her flight deck to accommodate heavier planes.
