These Days you and MUi Bacall did not really count. You ap parent ly noggea uie allow. Mr. Huston said: The official spokesmen at all press conferences Held by Uie group were the two aignera of thla letter" that is, Huston and Dunne. Maybe It la embarrassing to you to quarrel with Uie director of your picture. Maybe you feel that If he aays that you should atay In that organisation, you ought to ao it. Maybe your mimeographed circular, telling all, was also "lll-advlsed, even foolish." Maybe it was an impetuous thing to do. You sure do get Into situations. But don't try to fox me again or Uie public. With best regards to the lady. GEORGE E. 80KOLSKY, By GKOKUE E. SOKOLSKY DEAR HUMPHREY BOG ART: Borne time ago, I received a mimeographed letter Xrom you In which you confessed to a foolish act. It seemed to be a letter from a true heart and I accepted It on Its face value. So I thought I would be a good fellow and advertise your virtues. Subsequently, I received a letter signed by Philip Dunne and John Huston In which Uiey assumed full responsibility for your admitted foolishness. They got you on Uie flying carpet from Hollywood to WaslUngton to picket the Thomas committee by beauty and glamor. Now, no one forced you to send out Uiat mimeo graphed letter. You did It of your own choice. You broke no law when you flew to WaslUngton at the bead of your gang. The right of petition la inalienable. Every American has that right. In fact, an American may even be a communist, if he chooses. It Is a matter of philosophy and taste, not of law. But you chose to say: "I have never In my life been identified with any group which was even sympathetic to communism. e e Not on Any of Them III. iY NAME will not be found on any communist y front organisation as a sponsor of anything communistic, "I went to Washington because I thought fellow Americans were being deprived of their consUtuUonal rights, and for that reason alone. "That Uie trip was tll-advised, even foolish, I am Very ready to admit. At Uie time it seemed Uie thing to do." Those are very strong words and I assumed that you meant them. They sounded like Uie honest reac tion of an American who had discovered that he had been foxed. And he wasn't having any of it. He seemed to stand up big and true. So now I come across an item in the Hollywood Citizen-News which reads: " 'No one,' said Bogart, 'has proved there is anything wrong witn uie Committee for the First Amendment. Until such time as it is proved un-American and sub versive I shall continue to be a member. If in the future it is proved un-American and subversive I shall resign.' " Now that, my dear Humphrey Bogart, is begging the question. This organizaUon is Uie one that contrived to get you to do something which you described as "ill advised, even foolish." Do you mean to say that you do not resent that? Do you mean to tell me that you bare no suspicions at all of an organizaUon that gets jrou to do something "ill-advised, even foolish"? You say in the Hollywood Citizen-News interview that you know nothing that would definitely describe the Committee for Uie First Amendment as subversive nd un-American. Maybe so. But you. yourself, wrote that Uie trip to Washington was "ill-advised, even foolish." You said that you were sometimes "a foolish and impetuous American." a Made a Fool of You WELL, there is nothing of impetuosity about con tinuing to belong to an organization that made a tool of you by your own admission. I also note that you are to appear in a motion picture, enUUed "Key Largo," directed by John Huston. The cast is to include your wife, Lauren Bacall, Edward G. Robinson, and, of course, others. This I take it is Uie same John Huston who described himself, in a letter to me, as Uie official spokesman for Uie Committee for the First Amendment He made Uie point in that letter: "Mr. Bogart and Miss Bacall were not, as you allege, "stuck out in front,' except by press photographers, While Uie group was in Washington." In other words, The World Today By De WITT MarKENZIE AP Foreign Affair Analyst "NNE hesitates to use Uie loud pedal of pessimism, V out It s necessary to record that China is In grave danger of collapse and even partial dismember ment. Mind you, we are talking about a vast country which houses a quarter of the globe's population and Uieoretically ranks as one of the Big Five powers along with America, Russia. Britain and France. She has reached such a chaoUc state economically, po litically and militarily that she cannot save herself by her own resources alone. Only outside aid on a vast scale could turn the trick. Having said Uiat you naturally think of Uncle Sam and wonder. Cliina has Just entered its Lunar New Year ("the year of Uie rat") and this normally calls for naUonn! celebration. However, Generalissimo Chiang Kai shek's government banned such observance because of Uie country's plight Chiang told his lieutenants at a dinner that "This year will better Ulan Uie last," but apparently he was wise enough to let this non committal remark he where it fell. Economy Blasted THE cold fact is Uiat Uie country's economy has been blown to smithereens. It's so bad that the ex perts can't give an intelligable estimate of the dis aster. People continue to die .of starvation. The inflation is as crazy as Uie mad hatter. This frightful economic disruption is in part a re flection of Uie political mess. Chiang has to struggle witn powerful forces which make it impossible esuumsn an eillclent government War lords and other vested interests continue to put self before country, with disastrous results. Small wonder that the Chinese communist rebels have been making a field day of this politico-economic collapse which inevitably has crippled Chiang's mili tary efforts to crush Uie rebellion. The position of uie government as regards Manchuria is close to des Derate, and to me Uiat connotes near horjelessniwss The Chinese communists are in control of that great ana ricn country, ana we can at least say that it will oe a military marvel if Chiang can retrain it Worse yet there is a heavy exodus from cities which are inreatenea by the communists in Northern China. In fact the government's position north of the Yangtze uirouGn central unina Is bad generally. SIDE GLANCES tea iki ar m avicr c. T. ttc O 1 rT wr. 2l2 "Yes, you predicted the 1929 depression, but you should have quit then you're still predicting crashes and his tory proves you can't miss if you keep it up long enough!" Separate State IF the Chinese communists are able to consolidate tneir Bold on Manchuria, what have you? Well obviously you have a separate state, for one thing. But that's far from being the whole story. Chiang's government has charged Uiat Russia has been giving Uie Chinese reds material help in their reoeiuon. 01 course that charge has to be proved, but if it is true (and neutral observers generally accept it) Manchuria would become another satellite of Moscow. This would multiply the already vast influence of Uie Soviet Union in Uie Far East so Uiat she might be Uie dominant power In Uiat part of the world. Recognition of China's great need is seen in the U. S. state department's request to the senate foreign relations committee for an increase in Uie fund for Chinese aid. The new estimate is for $570,000,000. Naturally $570,000,000 more won't save China. As a matter of fact, Uie problem is so vast that nobody knows whether it can be solved by money. Some close observers point out Uiat China has had great experience with adversity, and say that on this basis her position isn't hopeless. Be Uiat as may, China's salvation depends in major degree upon herself. The Doctor Says Hearing Aids Help Deaf ; By EDWIN P. JORDAN, M. D. Written for NEA Service As a rule, poor hearing comes on gradually and does not cause much difficulty for the first months or rears. Only when it is far advanced, ana severe neatness has developed. does it serve as a real drawback to social and business affairs. Many people, whose deafness is making hie difficult for them, keep putting off getting a hearing aid. Perhaps this is because they do not want to let people see the signs of their difficulty. Whatever Uie rea son, it is unfortunate, because to day there are many good electrical Instruments which help greaUy In many forms of deafness. The hearing loss may not be the -me for both ears. Similarly, many people can continue to hear low tones Just about as well as ever even after their ability to hear high ones, such as a high-pitched voice, has become seriously impaired. Hearing is often better some days than others. A person, who is slightly deaf, may be able to hear spoken voices well in a relaUvely quiet room, but hardly able to hear anything when there is noise in the background. Hearing for such things as symphonic music may be retained, after ordinary business adjustment later on. The batteries, which supply Uie electrical energy, have to be kept up. With proper choice of instrument good adjust ment, and familiarity in how to use it, many persons with defective hearing can get along very well.
