Today's Roundup By MALCOLM EPLEY NAVAL AIR STATION, SEATTLE (Special Cor respondence) At smooth and beautiful an air trip as one could take any time, anywhere, ended tonight at this handsome, sprawling installation on the shore ot Lake Washington In the northern precincts of SealUe. It was the first leg of a Journey that tomorrow Is to put us on board the USS AJax on a "civilian orienta tion" cruise down the Pacific coast. . It was an auspicious beginning lor our Jaunt, that flight over the snowlields of Central and Northern Oregon and Western Washington, that began after noon In Klamath Falls today iFriday. February 6) and ended Just at dusk In Seattle. My Klamath companion on the Journey is State Legislator Henry Semon, the Henley potato farmer who knows the fore and aft of a potato digger Just as I do the part and starboard sides of a typewriter but not a lot about ships. An other landlubber, Flavel Temple, a Portland hotel man. Joined us in Portland, and I understand two or three othei civilian citisens will Join our litvle party tomorow morning before the AJax alls with us from Bangor. The navy picked Henry and me up at Klamath Falls this time. Commander Bert Creighton of Seattle naval air public. Information office came with the two motored Beechcraft that put down on the Klamath airport at noon. After lunch at the Pelican we took off in brilliant sunshine, and found similarly perfect weather all the way to Seattle. The navy men wanted to go over Crater lake. I was given the co-pilot's seat to direct the pilot to the lake. I found It not so easy to orient one's self in the sky when one Is accustomed to seeing everything from the ground, but managed to spot the notch In the mountains that led us right over the great caldera that cradles Klamath's premier scenic attraction. I stayed In the co-pilot spot all the way Into Port land, with earphones adjusted to hear the buzz, crackle and talk that goes on in the air all the time. Shortly after leaving Crater lake, we heard a pilot report to the tower at Med ford that he believed his plane was on fire, and asked that there be a fire truck standing by when he came Into the Medford field. "He believes there's a fire," said my pilot. "I think I'd find out." We tried to keep tuned for further developments, but heard nothing more of it. Over Redmond my pilot reported his position, and again In the neighborhood of The Dalles, where we turned westward to go down the Columbia. The white peaks are beautiful from the ground, but even more awe-inspiring from the air where you see them at a different angle and see more of them at one time. For a while we were looking at eight Jefferson, Hood, St. Helen's, Adams, Rainier, and the Three Sisters. Fresh snow lay all over the northern part of the Oregon route. From the air, the snow fields were studded with curious bumps or blisters which puzzled us and which we never quite figured out. At Portland municipal field we slipped gently down on the runway, after trying vainly to contact the tower there. The pilot finally asked someone else to relay to the tower his Intention to land on runway No. 11. Nobody was In the way and we came In without Inci dent, taking of with Mr. Temple and a new supply of gasoline aboard. The snow Held and mountains of the Oregon leg of the trip were beautiful, but even more Impressive was the ride through the gathering dusk Into Seattle. It was cloudy to the west and the sunset was terrific, out there over the tiers of mountains and billows of purple STATIC By RONNIE BROWN KFLW tonight introduces a new half-hour drama program which goes by the handle of "Twelve Players." The program'! title is taken from the fact that the cast Includes 12 top AFRA radio artists of Hollywood air fame and although al! of them are now cast every week in starring rolts. they all show up and audition before each other to win the parts. All of this supposed ly brings out the tact that an ac tor's severest critic la another actor. Tonight'! drama is dubbed, "Dino Is Dead," and comes on at 8:30 p m. e e e The Boy Scouts come in for a lion's share of attention on "Point Sublime" tonight as Ben Willet tries his hand at the old good deed stuff. Soon we were over a vast field ot lights that was Tacoma, and beginning to lose altitude as we swung over big splashes of water and black land In the Puget Sound area. I couldn't see our field as we came over It in the dark, but knew we were due tor a lauding as we banked sharply to the right Back we come over the lake, and suddenly I saw, straight ahead, the two rows ot brilliant lights lining our runway. They looked tor a moment as it they were vertical columns, and we were entering a vast door. We entered, our wheels again touched the earth with hardly a bump, mid In a few moments we were out of the plane and riding to the bachelor officers' quarters here we were put up In fine accommodations for the night. The smoothness of the air throughout the trip was a matter for much comment. When I spoke about it to Commander Creighton, he held up a finger and said: "Editorially speaking, sir. what happened was that the navy saw the bumps before we got to them and went around them." That's good enough for me. I hope the navy does as well with Japanese mines and rough seas which may lie ahead ot us In our cruise down the coast. The World Today By De WITT MacKENZlK AP Foreign Affairs Analyst SOMETIME, somewhere, there must be a showdown between the big democratic majority of the United Nations and the red minority comprising Russia and her satellites, who thus far have hamstrung the peace organization and Korea may well furnish an early important (if not definitive) test. The position leading up to the present disorders In Southern Korea Is this: at the end of the late war the hermit kingdom, as Korea was called, was occupied by Russian troops in the northern half and by Americans In the south. It was understood that the aim should be to consolidate the two areas and hold free elections tor establishment ot an independent Korean government. Instead of pursuing this policy, Russia sealed off the north from the south completely and communized the Soviet section. At the same time red agents made an Intensive drive to organize communist cells in the south and have done their best to create unrest among the people. a a Peace in For East KOREA, being a mighty atom strategically from the military standpoint, is a pivotal point for peace In the Far East. What more natural, then, than that the UN general assembly finally should send a commission to Korea with instructions to hold elections throughout the country meaning both south and north. The Soviet Ukraine declined a place on the commission. Well, of course the Russians have refused to permit this commission even to enter Northern Korea. Not only that, but a wave of sabotage and bloody political disturbances, aimed at hampering the commission, has swept the United States zone, and American sources attribute this trouble to leftists. The commission now has reported Its failure to the UN Uttle assembly (which sits when the general as sembly isn't in session) and has settled back to await the decision. So now the big speculation is what line the little assembly will take. An American spokesman at Lake Success was quick to express the view that the correct procedure would be to instruct the commission to carry on, that is, to establish a government In Southern Korea with the idea that the north should be brought in as soon as possible. That sounds like horse-sense and also breathes the urgency and determination with which Secretary of State Marshall hlmselt advocated the creation of the commission by the general assembly. a Powerful Weapon THE old adage that half a loaf is better than none Is particularly apt as applied to Korea. For America to abandon the Southern Koreans and let the bol shevists take them over not only would outrage Justice but would place in Russia's hands a powerful weapon for military operations. It was Russian influence In Korea back in 1904 which was the main Immediate cause of the Russo-Japanese war, for Nippon main tained that Korea was a "dagger pointing at her heart." With the half loaf the UN will have to be contented until such time as Russia has a change of heart. The peace organization will at least have done all possible to implement the vast majority of world opinion In these trying times. disease. This is not, incidentally, the sort of heart disease dealt with by John J. This Is revealed In a special pub lic opinion sur vey conducted in the three na tions which would be the principal recipi ents of aid un der the Murshull plan now being debated in congress. The survey was conducted simul taneously by three affiliates of the American Gallup poll the British Institute of public opinion, the French Institute of public opinion and DOXA. the Italian Institute of public opinion. The some questions were used In each country. A survey of American opinion completed about the same time by the American Institute of public opinion shows tliot American con ceptions of why our government proposed the Marshall plan are somewhat more lofty and Idealistic than the conceptions held -by the people of Britain.
