Instruction Car Here On Refresher Course Work Southern Peclftc'i "Instruction r," equipped with models, charts, motion picture projector, mid man ned by experts on railroad rules and operating procedures, has arrived In Klamath Falls to assist employes llh refresher courses In railroad ing. O. R. Rice, system examiner, Is in charge of the railroad s "rolling classroom" which will be here throughout the week. The special car tours the com pany's more than 8000 miles of west trn lines, and the Instruction work carried on among employes is one of the major activities in the rail road's constant effort to achieve maximum safety In all its opera tions, Rice explained. Each employe concerned with train operation at tends two classes at each visit to the Instruction car. a total of 19.296 attending the daytime and evening sessions held last year. Conference-type classes are con ducted on a questlon-and-answer basis by Rice, a former chief train dispatcher, and his two assistants, F. H. Berger and L. B. Baling, both former conductors. Instruction and discussion place emphasis on train order rules and general rules gov erning safe and efficient operations. A model, representing six miles of standard railroad, is an important factor In the visual education pro gram. By means of its tracks, switches, sidings, crossings and an electrically operated block signal system, the Instructors can work out and graphically answer any prob lem that occurs tn handling trains. The car Is parked at the depot here. The railroad has operated a "roll ing classroom" for more than 40 years. Rice having been with It the last 10 years. The present one is remodeled from an observation car. One half is used as living quarters for the three instructors, the other half being devoted to the class room. Quite a number of changes on the Shasta division have been reported here. Walter C. Hughes, for the past four years trainmaster located at Klamath Falls, takes off today, Thursday, to assume his duties as trainmaster at San Luis Obispo, Calif. Hughes Is being replaced here by Harvey Teal of Nlland. Calif. Teal, incidentally, will not only take over Hughes' desk but will also move Into Hughes apartment at S13 El . dorado. N It all started when Claire Phelps, ttuinmaster at Watsonville Junction, was moved to Portland, a fellow named Robey transferred from San Luis Obispo, to Watsonville Junc tion, and Hughes replaces Robey. Walker B. Knotts, assistant train master at Alturas, has been pro moted to trainmaster at Nlland, re placing Teal, and a man by the name of Knight up at Crescent Lake has been moved to Alturas to take' over Knotts' old Job. Hope this is straight. Another change of interest to rail road men here Is the promotion ot B. S. Sines, superintendent of the Salt Lake division at Osdeu. Ut., who has been appointed special rep resentative of the president. A. T. Mercler. J. R. Kaulbough has been named to Sines' post on the Salt Lake division. F. V. Percival. superintendent of Oreat Northern's Klamath division, returned Wednesday from Chicago where he has been for the past several weeks on business. C. E. Mnrston. traveling car serv ice agent from Seattle, Is here visit ing the GN offices. George Suprenant. who suffered the loss of the toes on one foot when he was injured at Malin some time ago. is leaving Friday for Minne apolis. Minn., where he will liBve plastic surgery on his foot. Mrs. Suprenant is going with her hus band. Suprenant is a GN brakeman. Mrs. Phil Brick is leaving Friday for Portland to visit her husband. GN conductor, who ts a patient at the veterans hospital. Mrs. Neal Gibson, secretary to Frank Sexton. GN chief clerk, writes from San Bernardino. Calif, that she is recovering satisfactorily from major surgery which she underwent shortly before the death of her hus band. She expects to return to her Job here sometime In May.
