Investigation For Dam To Start PORTLAND, Jan. 30 W) Pre liminary Investigative work will start soon on the proposed John Day dam site, six miles upstream from Celllo on the Columbia river. Army engineers disclosed this yes terday with announcement that Kennon Diamond Drilling company, Compton, Calif., was low bidder at $25,405 for drilling and testing eight core drill holes at the site. The engineers rejected a $182,258 bid from Carl Halvorsen. Salem, to build a school and play shed at the Detroit dam site. The job will be aone oy contract labor. Police Chief Free On Bond OREGON CITY, Jan. 30 (Ai Lawrence Plttenger, Oregon City police chief under Indictment of as sault and battery, was free today on $1000 bond but was temporarily sus pended from the force. He was accused by the grand Jury of slapping a 20-year-old youth last month. Previously Plttenger re signed as Eugene police chief after slapping a youth there. The city commission suspended Plttenger yesterday after learning of the indictment.
