No Hope Secretary of State Pierre Abelin told newsmen after a cabinet meet ingthe second In 12 hours the government could not continue if the gold clause met defeat. Schuman. Foreign Minister Georges Bidault and Finance Min ister Rene Mayer went before a meeting of socialist deputies after the cabinet session in an attempt to awing the socialists behind the pro posal. Bidault stepped out after the meeting had been going on two hours. "I hare the Impression that neither M. Schuman nor I was able to convince them." he said. Finance Minister Mayer continued the government attempts to change the socialists' minds. The assembly voted last night, 373 t3 184, to place the gold proposal first on Its agenda. While the vote in this respect supported Schuman, it had little political significance. There is no other Important legis lation pending. TOONERVILLE FOLKS Nine Killed In Holy Land Riot JERUSALEM, Jan. 28 W Vio lence broke out at several points In Palestine today after a night of strife which took nine lives. A Jewish-owned shop, now occu pied by Arabs, was blown up In the eastern part of Jerusalem. An Arab was arrested. Bullets pepoered a Jewish motor convoy in the same area. The mili tary escort returned the fire, which a m e from the direction of the Arab-controlled old city. Armed Arabs held up a freight train on the L yd da-Haifa line. They seized part of the contents of two cars of military stores, all the con tents of a car of miscellaneous goods, and some wood and cement, an official said. In Tel Aviv, two Jewish prisoners were abducted from the Jayarkon hospital by a group described by of ficials as armed Jews. The prisoners had been held on charges of murder and possession of arms. In last night's violence, five Arabs, two British soldiers and two Jews were slain. The toll of dead since the United Nations voted partition November 29 rose by unofficial count to 994. Eviction Asked At Labor Camp SALEM. Jan. 28 WV-Salem Agri cultural House, Inc., a bousing cor poration formed by businessmen and farmers to operate the farm la bor camp here, brought suit today in circuit court to evict three families which have refused to move from the camp. The organization took over the camp from the federal government, intending to use It to house sea sonal farm workers. The camp has no facilities to house residents in winter months. Mass., under 81000 ball for grand jury action after charging the youth stole an automobile from a theatre owner who gave him a night's lodging and an offer of a job. Charles W. White told a Justice of peace court at a hearing that Grove came to his theatre, "looking cold and hungry," and asking for work. Whit said he took the youth home overnight, fed him dinner and breakfast and gave him a sweater. Some time after White had driven the young man into the city and directed htm to where he might find work. White said he discovered his car was missing. Police recovered the automobile. Jan. 28 tjPi Los Angeles and San Francisco firms were low bidders in a combined offer of 82J96.950 for channel clearing work at Coos Bay, the army en gineers said today. The San Francisco Bridge com pany and the Standard Dredging Corp.. Los Angeles, were among the fcur bidders on the work. The job calls for clearing rock and dredging a 30-foot channel. The government estimate was 83349.630. The army said 8450.000 was avail able for the work in the fiscal year. Merrill Adds To Polio Fund Merrill grange added $50 to the March of Dimes fund with a bene fit card parly held Monday night. The money represented half of ihe total proceeds. The remaining money will be given to other char ities. Business firms who donated prise were Merrill Crater Lake dairy store. Merrill Safeway store, Ben Franklin store. Merrill Dumber com pany, Castleman pharmacy, San ford's grocery, Hodges brothers, and the Valley service station. Bridge awards went to Mrs. C. E. Sharp, high: Melvm Bowman, sec ond; and In pinochle. Mc Donald and Noel Turner of the Klamath Lake Moulding company were in Salem on Thursday and Fri day attending the accident preven tion conference held by the state Industrial accident commission. FIRE 6ILVERTON, Jan. 28 UP, Fire destroyed the Thomas grade school, one of the oldest in the Central Willamette valley, yesterday after noon shortly after dismissal of thi pupils. Firemen from here and Scotts Mills said the fire appeared to origi nate on the roof of the frame build ing. Neighbors saved most of the books, benches and a piano before flames reached the lower part of the building.
