Bend Girl Wins Prizes BEND, Jan. 27 (P) A pretty high school sophomore here, who has (pent most of her life under physi cians' care and wrote about her "heart's desire" to a national radio program, is going to get her wish. Betty Jean White will receive a radio her heart's desire and also a complete wardrobe of clothes, an electric clock, wrist watch and a number of other special gifts as a reward for the letter she wrote for the radio program. The girl has been attending Bend high school this year as her first full year at regular classes. An ailment suffered in childhood left her unable to live a normal, active Jife, although she enjoys watching sports and attends school games regularly. - Since her mother died in 1942, the girl has made her home here with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. X. L. Mosley. Reds Granted Us Of Schools NEW YORK, Jan. 27 . Supreme Court Justice Charles W, Froessel has refused to order com munlaia and fascists barred from after-hours use of New York City public schools. William Stanton had sought to prevent use of school buildings by the communist party or olher groups that the superintendent of schools might believe to be communist, nasi or fascist, or devoted to fostering religious and racial intolerance. Justice Froessel yesterday de clared that the communist parly is a legal organization under New York state law. He said therefore that he would not order the board of education to close the schools to communists. PASSES PORTLAND, Jan. 27 UP) Carl August Appelgren, 76, president of the Security Title company here and Portland attorney, died at his home here Sunday. He served in .the state house of representatives to 1813. Classified Ads Bring Results Boatmen To Quit CIO SEATTLE, Jan. 27 tt Declaring that the Congress of Industrial Or ganization iCIO "has shown no initiative in bringing about unity," Capt. John M. Fox. president of the Inland Boatmen's Union of the Pa cific, said today the union will quit the CIO and rejoin the American Federation of Labor. A referendum vote on disaffilia tion with the CIO carried by a 6-1 majority. Fox said. The union has 4000 members and jurisdiction from Puget Sound to San Diego. The IBU quit the AFL in 1937 to join the newly-crested CIO. Fox said the union's policies will not be changed as a result of the shift, and the union "will continue to operate on a basis of complete autonomy and self-rule in relation ships with employers and other unions." Union President David Dublnsky said. Dublnsky's statement yesterday said only five members of the Los Angeles joint boards would be af fected. He declined to name them. The union head said the action had been authorized by the ex ecutive board. Dubinsky said he and other officers of the union had signed the pledges required under the Taft-Hartley act for access to the machinery of the national labor relations board.
