I.Mr:a u. lifts u. , Orrtun lllfhrr I.Hural-Bti jI'i Small telescopes in the hands of studious and energetic persons have often brought nationwide recogni tion to their operators. Outstand ing in this respect is the flock of in struments owned by E. L. Forsyth, 70-year-old retired locomotive engi neer of the Santa Fe line. Aside from the care of his orange orchard near Fall Brook. Calif.. Mr. For syth's chief interest is the starry skies. Our astronuiner is an unuMtally active member of the American As sociation of Variable Star Observers, the American Meteor society, and the Los Angeles Astronomical so ciety. Around 1912. his observa tions on variable stnrs appeared in Popular astronomy almost every month. His reports on meteors are so complete as to put to shame most younger observers. At the time of the great meteor shower of Octo ber 9. 1946. he organized a most efficient observing party, so ar ranged that all sections of the sky cnuld be watched. His report was widely published. From October 19 to November 10. 1947, when Encke's comet was eas ily visible telescopically before dawn. Mi. Forsyth observed on 11 morn ings. He sent the present writer detailed reports with the notation. "All other dates, sky overcast." Last August this amateur astron omer received notice from H. L Freeman. president of the Los An geles Astronomical society, that "last evening it was unanimously voted that the society confer on you life membership." The recipi ent modestly writes. He remembers when five years old "my dad took me out ' tc see the great comet of 1B82 " At ' eight he w as given a Mmll spyglass, ' which he still has. When IS. he ! bought a larger one a hi Mont gomery Ward. "Then I really started looking at the stars." At '.. 16. he saw the huge mounting fur the 40-inch Yerfces refractor on d:splav at the Chicago Columbian ExnoNitinn, and a few years later visited the completed observatory at William Bay Wis. On his way , ht'mf to Topeka. he obtained a I "damaged lens" for $25 and made a telescope of it. In 1909. our enthUMat purchased a splendid J-inrh Bra.hcar refrac tor for $150. His 6-inch Melllsh re flector wus bousht in 1944. Both are now given abundant use. both public and private, in his hilltop Sunny Brae observatory, fully de scribed in the recent publication. Observatories of the United .States. ' Around I9'J0. Forsyth's astronom ical and photographic activities in , his spare time became so intense that he had to curtail them. "I ; needed a clear head to drive my : locomotive over these mountain giadcs." However, since he was re tired and pensioned a few years ' apo "Oh boy, but I'm having a wonderful time with my telescopes." HCIITS LAST NIGHT HOLLYWOOD Baby Dutch Cul bertson. 180.
