S3 (P Kay Francis, the actress, became seriously 111 under mysterious cir cumstances today and her stags manager, Howard Graham, 37, was booked at police headquarters "(or Investigation ot assault to kill." Miss Francis and Oraham were here with the stage production, "Slate of the Union." Miss Francis was removed early today from her hotel (Deshler-Wal-lirki to White Cross hospital, which described Iter condition as "Just lulr." She was still unconscious sev eral hours after her arrival there. Police said Oraham. taken into custody at the hospital, asserted Miss Francis summoned him to her hotel room and said she had taken some sleeping tablets. She had been severely burned, he added, when she fell against a radiator. Detective Karl Hanna and Police Sgt. Carl Clifton said they found evidence of a "wild party" In the hotel room. , Newbry Clamps Down On Drivers ! SALEM, Jan. 23 (flv-Secretary I of State Earl T. Newbry said today his department Is starting a special i campaign against motor vehicle i drivers who have more than their share of accidents. I He said any motorist with three : or more accidents within any 12 months will have his record placed in a special file. Later reports then ; would be checked carefully, and the driver's license would be suspended ! if circumstances warrant. Soviet Newsmen To Tour U. S. Zone FRANKFURT, Germany. Jan. 13 (V-A party of 11 Soviet news papermen today began a 13-day tour of the American tone. The Russian correspondents will visit American military government Installations, German factories and displaced persons camps. They also will talk with German politicians, trade union heads and shop com mittees in Frankfurt, Heidelberg. Stuttgart, Munich, Nuernberg and other cities. A party of American newspaper- men has just completed a tour of the Russian zona of Germany. Fort Klamath The meeting of the local home extension unit was held on Friday afternoon In the clubhouse, when the subject of "Care and Use ot New Materials" was presented and demonstrated to those present by Mrs. R. O. Varnum and Mrs. James Van Wormer. Attending were Mrs. William C. Hackler, Mrs. Alfred B. Castel Jr., Mrs. Ray Prowell. Mrs. Olaf Car penter, Mrs. Raymond S. Loosley, Mrs. H. T. Williams, Mrs. Frank Denton, Mrs. Coplan, Mrs. James Van Wormer and Mrs. R. O. Var num. Of interest to homemakers was the radio broadcast on the previous Thursday morning at 11 o'clock over The Herald and News station KFLW, when Mrs. Harry Orem and Mrs. Coplan of Fort Klamath were Introduced on the "Homemakers' Hour" and gave their favorite reci pes over the air. The former gave her recipe for apple salad, while Mrs. Coplan, a resident of Arizona before coming here, talked on Mexi can cookery. In which she is well versed due to her stay In Arizona. "Pod" Burch has returned from ' Pnrtlnnd. where he silent a week visiting Mr. and Mrs. Ed Albert and family, formerly operators of the Junction Service station here. Albert was later a member of the state police force in Klamath Falls before moving to Portland, where he is now employed as government stock Inspector. Albert made the trip by car to Fort Klamath to take Mr. Burch, a former employe at the service station, to Portland for the visit. Burch makes his home here with Mr. and Mrs. Earl Jackson and Is employed at the Crater Lake cafe. Mrs. Alfred B. Castel Sr. left for Portland last week to join her hus band who has been staying at the home of his parents in Portland while under a doctor's care. The Castels are expected back here in a few days, when they plan to go south for the remainder of the winter. W. McDanlel, moving contractor of Klamath Falls, last week com pleted the work of raising the resi dence of Mr. and Mrs. William Strahan in Fort Klamath a distance of 18 Inches from the ground. A foundation will be added lat-r In the season to the house. Word has been received here from Charles Williams who was at the time ot writing at Lima, Peru, on his South American tour. He stated he had flown to Lima from Santi ago, Chile on Christmas Day and was feeling fine and enjoying the trip very much. He said there was fine fishing in South Chile, but it was a little too cool for comfort, however. His Immediate plans In clude going to Bolivia, Equador and Colombia and eventually to Balboa where he Intends to get a boat to the United States. Williams is well known all over the Klamath coun try and his many friends will be Interested to hear of his pleasant trip. He left last fall on the South American trip from Prlnevllle, where he had been making his home with a daughter and family after leaving Fort Klamath following the sale of his property, the Wood River Auto court, which was purchased by Mrs. Evelyn Parks.
