Jan. 19 r The slashed body of nn elderly La Center, Wash., farm wife was found In a truck here today, and shortly afterward her husband was arrest ed In a downtown hotel room. A bizarre chain of events an ar gument over cooking, a house burn ing down, and a funeral were linked with the arrest. Police Chief Melvtn De Rock and two other officers said the husband Jap Oysters To Be Tried SEATTLE, Jan. 19 Wl Plans to experiment with a new type of oyster in Washington State waters were disclosed today by the state department of fisheries, simultane ous with announcement that a de partment director Is en route to Ja pan to supervise packing and ship ping of 30.000 cases of oyster seed to the Pacific coast. The new type oyster is the Kuma moto species from the Japanese province of the same name. Smaller than the Pacific oyster, it is still nearly twice the size of the state's native Olympia oyster and is re ported to be of excellent flavor. John Glud, director of the de partment oyster laboratory at Purdy, Pierce county, was to leave yesterday to supervise the shipment of the Pacific oyster seed, most of which will be from the Sendai bay area. It was Glud's second such trip to the Orient A similar shipment was brought back last year after arrangements with Gen. Douglas MacArthurs occupation govern' ment. J. P. Weyerhaeuser Jr., president of the Tacoma lumber firm, said the stock transfer affects two plants at Olympia and the Springfield Plywood corporation of Springfield, Ore., an operating subsidiary. Wash ington Veneer owned 60 per cent of the Springfield operation. Acquisition of the three plants five the Georgia company a total northwest production of 250,000,000 board feet of plywood annually. It already owns the Bellingham Ply wood oo rpo ration which it pur chased in May, 1947. Eight other plants are operated by it in south em states. No immediate announcement of operating plans was made by Owne B. Cheathem, president of the pur chasing firm. He said the trans action was on a cash basis, arranged by a long term bank loan. Weyerhaeuser recently added modern plywood manufacturing fa cilities at Longriew, Wash., and the aale was prompted, the announce ment said, by a feeling that "future embarrassments might arise through ensuring competition." Jan. 19 IJP The annual University of Idaho In. vitational debate tournament was won here Friday by Gonzaga of Spokane which defeated a dozen other college entries from Washing ton, Idaho. Oregon and Montana. Second place went to Washington State while Idaho. Oregon and Montana tied for third. The debate topic was: 'Resolved: that a federal world government should be established." The Idea of broadcasting from the Teen-age club gatherings went over big Saturday night with those who got a chalice to voice their opinions. According to Bill Procter, director, the broadcasts will become a regular feature of the Saturday after-game dances. The next real after-game dance will be after the Grants Pass game. February 7. Graduation announcements were the topic under discussion at the meeting of the senior selection com mittee today.
