The property owners asreed to the closing of all but two atrrrts immediately aliutling the highway, and told the highway mm they would, under those terms, sign the petition. The two streets which will re main open are Quarry and D streets, D street to be open on the aouth side of Uie highway only. The previous Intention of the depart ment, apparently, was to close oft all roads but Quarry street, but at last night's meeting. H. O. Smith, chief construction engineer for Uie state highway department, said that D street would connect with the highway on the south side. The D street entrance will complete what Is known as the "loop-leg"' route. County Engineer Wally Hector, who was in charge of the hearing, aaid that the I) street entrance was the main concern of the property owners, since It Is the route com monly used for mail delivery is well as general communication, l The highway department Is in Vrestcd In eliminating as many cross streets as possible on the pro posed four-lane highway. It was explained that better traffic con trol Is effected in that way and that fewer cross streets make for fewer traffic fatalities on the thoroughfares. Tule Firm Wins Pumping Plant Bid George R. Stacy of Tulelake was the successful low bidder for con struction of pumping plants. G. H, J. K, L and M, Coppock bay area. Bids were opened at the U. S. bur eau of reclamation office Wednes day. Stacy's bid was $128,375.75. Other bidders were Wickes Engineering and Construction company of Dcs Moines, la. for $132,404.25 and C. E. Blakley of Klamath Falls for $136, 669.25. Construction is to start as soon as ground and weather conditions are suitable. Youth Held For Shooting Attempt PORTLAND, Jan. S (! A young man In his early 20 s was held In a padded Jail cell today after trying to shoot a police officer and then strangle himself while being ques tioned. Detective James Quuin said the mall had orally admitted several local robberies. Quimi said two po licemen went to a cafe yesterday where a customer w-us boasting he had a gun. When Patrolman Har old Franklin asked for the gun. the man replied. "Yes, copper." and then pulled the trigger, but the gun did not fire. Allen Named To Post WASHINGTON. Jan. 8 , President Truman today announced he is appointing George V. Allen, now ambassador to Iran, as as sistant secretary of state for public affairs. Presidential Press Secretary Charles G. Ross made the an nouncement for the president. Allen, a native of Durham. N. C. will succeed William Benton, who recently resigned. The post carries with it direction ol the state department's "Voice ot America" broadcasts and other for eign information programs. Allen. 44. was understood to be Secretary of State Marshall's choice for the Job. Mr. Truman must send a formal nomination of Allen to the senate which can approve or reject his se lection for the post. Benton resigned last October 1 Since then. Holland H. Sargent, who was Benton's deputy, has been acting assistant secretary. The "Voice of America" broad casts had their origin during war time. Considerable opposition developed in congress to continuing them after the war. but much of it has died down. There was no immediate an nouncement of a successor to Allen as ambassador to Iran. ' Four communists were wounded. ; Police broke Into the printing plant. : using tear gas bombs and machine ' guns, when workers refused to halt presses printing an edition cover ing the action by the chamber of deputies last night stripping Bra lili.in communists, the largest roin- munist party in the western hem-, isphere. of all elective posts. President Kurica Gaspar Dutra i signed the auti-rommunist bill ln- to law soon after the chamber of i deputies acted. Communists affect ' ed included a senator. 14 deputies 1 6n state legislators and 18 mem i hers of the Rio de Janeiro city i council. The senate had passed the bill previously, j Order Refused The outburst came when Police i Inspector Fredgard Martins sought ; to enforce an order to close the newspaper lor 15 days. He was re fused admittance to the plant and j returned later with 10 police. The j workers were ordered to open the ! door. Pistol shots from within an swered the order. The 10 police men fired pistols Into the door as i riot sirens shrieked. A carload of i 40 red-capped shock police rolled : up. armed with tommyguns. They ! raced toward the door under fire ; and sprayed the shop with bullets. ; Then thev blasted holes in the grating, through which they shot , tear gas. nauseating gas and I asphyxiation gas. The communists 1 inside hurled incendiary bombs and hand grenades at the doorway, but none landed outside. The gas took effect swiftly, and soon 20 communists staggered out. The police, now numbering about 100. arrested them as they emerged, after their five-hour slrge. Shasta from the forest service offi cials who said three separate re ports had been received by their office that an object which might be a plane had been sighted on the side of Sims mountain, between , Dunsmuir and Redding.
