Although not elected he was picked lor the pot-t by Ihe Btasseu organization as a crusader against vice, gambling and almost unrestricted liquor traffic, he has turned cut to be the most vigorous and un relentms enemy err to wage r m thee evils of society. His story is told by Hufus Jarman in the Saturday Evening Post of this week. Of the new governor and the originality ol his tactics and the impartiality with which he strikes. Although much can be done for a i person who is struck down by blood poisoning, carelessness is still dan gerous. Accidents, which break the skin and allow germs to come in contact with the blood stream should receive prompt and proper treatment, as this may prevent blood poisoning. His first fight came in the legis- ' lature when old-line regulars refused to give him the ! tools with which to work until they became convinced from public reaction to feel that the people were with the governor. Then the lawmakers fell all over them selves lln their anxiety to get on the bandwagon. FROM there on Youngdahl has had things pretty much his own way. and the gambling fraternity I has conceded his victory in driving slot machines out i of Minnesota, despite the opposition of such influences : as are represented by the membership of the exclusive , Arlington club in downtown Winona. Elimination of slot machines from the club has reduced that private . institution's monthly profit from sOOO to 1150. The same situation existed around the Winona country club, one of the oldest and best known in the state. Formerly the club showed a net profit of about ' S9000 a year from liquor sales and slot machines but this year, despite a sharp rise in membership fees, it will show a net deficit of SCOuO or more. Thus it goes with ail private clubs and organizations such as are represented by the 410 American Legion clubs in the state. While these factions rant and rave in protest, the governor goes right ahead with the solid backing and full approval of a strong majority of the people.
