That s all over now. We can relax. The goal has been passed, which, of course. Is a vast gratification to this writer, who for the first time In his life got hooked Into the co-leadership of a campaign of this sort. We can quit cataloguing people according to their generosity and prejudices We can stop speculat ing, as we look at fellow citizens, as to how much they would be worth in a touch for the Commun ity Chest. It was quite an experience, that money-raising business. For one thing. It made us realize how many fine people there are. who are willing to throw In with you on a cause they think is worthy, and battle It through to the end win. lose or draw. We will not attempt to list those folks here, because we most certainly would Inadvertently omit some loyal worker. But there were scores of people who did a grand Job for the Community Chest campaign this year, and Ken Klahn and this writer feel the deepest gratitude to all of them. Likewise, we are warmly appreciative of the thousands of people who gave to the drive we heuded. Ail-Around Job THE accomplishments In the country districts was especially pleasing, but we don't want to over emphasize one division against the others in voicing our praise. It was an all-around good job that was done for us and the Chest. There weren't many fall downs,' as the results show. There are always certain bits of gossip and false Information that get around In a campaign of this sort, and we want to mention some of those things now. For one tiling, a lot of folks complained about the "outside" agencies which received some aid from the Chest These were the ten agencies which were approved for participation In the State Chest. The Klamath County Chest accepted the obligation of meeting this count y'a quota of the Stale Chest, which was only about $10,000 of the total of 166.000 nt as the Klamath goal. Most people, after the worthiness of the State Chest program was explained to them, accepted the Idea as a good one. There was also some religious feeling In evidence, and it was Interesting that this proved to be a two way matter. We received aome complaint because one agency in the State Chest had a Catholic affilia tion, and we received a Catholic complaint that a certain other agency was anti-Catholic. In these in stances, a little explanation usually helped to Iron out the difficulty. The Chest, as Is clear to everyone, was w ell supported by people of all religions, as it should be. Headquarters THERE was some objection to the fact that the Chest campaign required a headquarters office and staff. People thought this Involved a lot of un necessary overhead. But our experience proved to us Hint to stage successfully a campaign of this sort, it is accessary to keep a paid administrative staff on the Job. It is necessary to keep books, to post returns, to check up on various phases of the drive, to audit accounts and keep the money straight, and to do many other things which involve efficient, full time help. The amount of money involved, the sire of the volunteer staff of workers, and the extent of the whole campaign, required a headquarters staff. It was not a large staff, but It was a good one. Incidentally, the Balslger Motor company gave the quarters rent-free. This year's Chest campaign, by action of the Chest directors, had professional direction. That Is, It was directed by a nationally recognized firm. This Is widely done by Community Chests. It was the first time it was done here, and results speak for them selves. Volunteers Did It BUT there could have been no success In this cam paign without the hard work of the volunteers who did all the field work The country success, we be lieve, was due in large part to the decision of Division Chairman Bryant Williams to enlist the help of a special gifts committee, which gave the outside drive a running start. Once that was under way, the city campaign began to take fire, and from there on out everything went fine. The growing feeling that the drive was going to go over the top helped give it momentum. People like to ride a winning horse. The final result of the campaign is a basis for re newed faith in the generosity of Klamath basin people. A number of out-of-pocket fund-raising campaigns have failed here m tecent vears. and some of the good supporters of the town were beginning to get a bit worried about that. But the Chest effort proved that Klamath Basin people are essentially generous and can be depended on to come through for a worthy cause if a vigorous effort is made to present It to them. And if a cause is worthy, it is worth a vigorous effort. This writer, speaking for himself and his co-worker. Ken Klahn. wants at this point to thank people for a lot of help.
