KLAMATH FALLS, OtfECON MONDAY, DEC. 8, 1947 Farmers Urged To Register A lust minute call to nil farmers of Klamath county to vote In farm program elections was Issued today by Burrcll Short, chairman of the county agricultural conservation committee. Short urticd farmers to make cer tain that their vote will be counted In Die election ot community com mitteemen and delegates to the county convention where the county agricultural conservation committee will be elected. He said Uiat too often farmers let other Jobs and Interests keep them from voting in Uicse elections. But this year, with so many vital deci sions and perplexing problems re garding current production and conservation, he stressed that farm ers cannot afford to forego the op portunity to vote. The agricultural adjustment act provides that Uie administration of the farm program on the county and community level shall be in Uie hands of local farmer-elected com mitteemen. According to Secretary of Aexi culture Clinton P. Anderson, "this approach, right down to the county and community level has proved it self Uie most effective organization yet devised for the administration of any national farm program. This country has never witnessed ft finer demonstration of the processes of democracy in action than the com mittee system under the agricultur al conservation program." TOONERVILLE FOLKS It was only a question of time ....... 1 re City License Due January 1 Applications for 1948 city licenses were pouring into the city hall this morning as January 1 deadline draws nearer. Reminders to license holders were sent out In November and alt restaurant, hotel, apartment, dairy, and barber shop operators as well as most other types of businesses must get new licenses this month. Several hundred licenses are is sued annually, and about 60 have been issued in recent days. Bicycle licenses will be on sale Saturday, December 13, in the coun cil chamber at the city hall. The two-year tags are black on red this year and cost 50 cents. Bicycle owners are reminded to have the following information with them when applying fcr a license: bicycle frame number, brand of seat, and brake, and name of bicycle. Robbers Fail To Break Into Safe : PORTLAND, Dec. 8 m Robbers broke into a tavern today, tried vainly to blow open a large safe. The fuse didn't ignite the charge. They broke through to the pro prietor's adjoining living quarters, and netted $1200 in cash. Proprietor Frank G. Shores said it wouldn't have helped them if their safe blowing attempt had worked. The safe, said Shores, was unused and empty: He hadn't been able to get it open for two years. Huffman Final Rites Set Tuesday Final rites for John Franklin Huff man, 74-year-old retired Sam's Neck rancher who died December 6. will be held from the Church of the Nazarene at Dorris at 2:30 p. m. Tuesday. Ward s will be in charge. The Rev. J. W. Geller will officiate. Interment will be in the Lakeview cemetery at Macdoel. Smith Heads Master Printers Otto L. Smith of Smith-Bates Printing company, Klamath Falls, was elected vice president of the Master Printers of Oregon, organ ized Sunday in Portland. Some 100 commercial printers met to organize tne group, representing 27 cities in the state. Elected presi dent was F. E. Burnbull of Eugene. Classified Ads Bring Results Condrey Asks City Survey Councilman A. F. Condrey will in troduce a request for a general over all survey of the city of Klamath Falls at the regular meeting of the city council tonight. Monday. Condrey said today that the pro posed survey would cover most city problems including traffic condi tions, lighting, recreation and gen eral administration. He said that he feels there is a definite need for such a survey In order to form an efficient improvement plan for the city. In the absence of Mayor Ed Osten- dorf, who is in Portland on business ; this week. Council President Paul i O. Landry will preside over the I session. ; Pair Held For Ski Theft Two Rogue river valley youths, Eugene Louis Shepherd. 18. of Jack sonville, and Byron Baker Carter, 19, Medford. were due for arraign ment before U. S. Commissioner Bert C. Thomas this afternoon in connection with the theft of ski equipment at Crater Lake park last night. Nature of the charge to be placed against the youths has not been made public. They were taken into custody at the park by Chief Ranger Clyde E. Gilbert, and brought to the county Jail last night. At the jail they were booked to be held for federal authorities. Sheriffs Ask Teletype System PORTLAND. Dec. 8 ttP) A state wide teletype system connecting all law enforcement agencies will be recommended to Governor Hall by the Association of Oregon Sheriffs. The sheriffs voted at their con vention here to submit the pro posal. Multnomah county Sheriff Martin T. Pratt said the system would enable quick distribution of Information to all police depart ments and sheriffs' offices. At present, the state police have a radio broadcasting system, but it is not monitored by many local po lice offices. The radio time has to be divided between state police and the highway and forestry depart ments, which also utilize it. The sheriffs also recommended that criminal identification bureaus be consolidated under one head to eliminate duplication of work. Power Failure Hits Copco Lines All customers of The California Oregon Power company "this sldn of the mountains" had their power shut off for a couple of minutes at 1 p. m. Sunday due to storm conditions. Officials here said the tnterrup tion occurred on one of the trans. mission lines which connect various power houses between Prospect and Copco 2 on the Klamath river and de-energized by weather. The lines "kicked back on after the brier in. termisslon of service. Aid Bill Faces Test Ballots WASHINGTON. Dec. 8 The emergencv foreign aid bill rolled to ward a series of test ballots in the house today with a top republican opponent forecasting lin.il passage by an overwhelming margin. Chairman Leo Allen iR.-Ill.) of the rules committee told a reporter there would be no mc than 75 votes against the bill. The house has 434 members and one vacancy. That final vote could come late today, but it is more probable some time tomorrow. First, the house had to act on various pniendments to raise or lower the $590,000,000 ('mil lion total or tie restrictions to the assistance the bill would provide for France. Italy. Austria and China. Allen himself is against the meas ure. But he said the vote against it might be no more than 50. And he has a reputation among his col leagues for unusual accuracy in pre dicting votes. As the bill came from the foreign affairs committee, it would author ize $530,000,000 to carry France. Ita ly and Austria through the winter plus $60,000,000 for China. According to U. 8. forest service regulations the trees harvested from the Rogue River national forest by lewis Byron Atistrd were measured ana checked out by Ausil Peiuve, general district assistant. Dec. 8 .4 The United States, determined not to let lack of an agreement with Rus sia worsen Inflationary trends In Germany and Korea, has printed new currency for use in the Amer ican zones of both those occupied countries. While the decision for coping with black market money troubles confronting American military gov ernment authorities on both sides of the world was reached weeks ago, it was kept a top secret be cause of the big four foreign min isters conference in London. There was no public announce ment, but government authorities privately confirmed the action. The London conference, which opened November 25, has made no perceptible progress toward either of its twin objectives peace treaties for Germany and Austria. American efforts to obtain Rus sian agreement on a unified gov ernment for Korea likewise have met with one failure after another. In the case of Germany, a new currency for the U.
