Venus may well serve this year as a fitting Christmas star. Jupiter Is now too close to the sun for observation. The planets Mars and Saturn are now well up above the horizon about due east before midnight, and with the bright star Regulus, which is between them, makes a striking, somewhat-curved line. The planets are practically the same brightness and appear noticeably more brilliant than Regulus. Mars is of reddish hue and Is the lowest of the three. For the bright stars of the evening, let us observe around 8 p. m. Low in the sky in the south southwest, Fomalhaut in the mouth of the southern Fish glitters with blue white light. Fairly low and almost due west Altalr, the brightest star of the Eagle, is conspicuous between two near-by stars of lesser brilliance. Still well up In the northwest we Ilnd the brightest star in the west ern half of the heavens. This is Vega, which with some fainter near by stars outlines the celestial Harp. Vega Is one of the nearer of the bright stars, being only 27 light years from us. At some distance al most immediately above Vega, Deneb heads the large group, the Northern Cross. The three stars of about equal brilliance, but less than Deneb's, form a conspicuous cross arm. Fainter stars below extend down to the foot of the cross. The familiar Big Dipper is low and due north. Look at It again at 9 p. m. and It will be found further to the right. The two right-hand stars of the Dipper's bowl point to the North Star, which appears quite high. Low in the enst northeast, the heavenly twins. Castor and Pollux, appear fairly near each other. Pol lux is the lower and more orange of the two.
