PARIS W -The first of Paris' showlnit of full stvle Indicates that
dresses are goinir to be longer and broader, and' that much attention
will be paid to the part of a dress you nonce as you come along behind
a pretty woman going down the street.
The first opening last night was by Jean Desses, who draped bits
of tha Orient Into his new fashions and brought soma rather warm
com menu from some ol the professionals who attend such shows.
Deases used a lot of black, wool satin and silk jersey. He did much
draping that swung the center of gravity down to table-top level and
even below. He employed lavishly a trick centuries old in Die Orient.

Style;
and inward like the drawslruig on
an Inverted pun. This gave his
designs a peculiar fullness below
the hipline which French couturiers
called the "barrel shape."'
Except for some of his formal
evening gowns there was Utile varia
tion In length. Dresses and some of
the coats reached half-way down
the calf of the leg.
As to the diameter of his designs
he was absolutely reckless. On one
wool dress he put pockets at hip
level In front which extended bulg
lngly downward like the wind vanes
of a Jet plane. It made the waist
line look almost as narrow as your
wrist.
His main attention was to the
back. One little black short-jacketed
suit had a dozen pleats down the
skirt. Cocktail gowns sometimes
bulged out madly In all directions
and one evening gown, again ankle
length, had a double bustle.
Desses didn't seem much con
cerned about preserving the flat
stomachs of his models. On several
models, including one' in coarse
wool, he frankly recognized that
some women dont have flat stom
achs and he built to tit.
