1 PACE TWO HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS. ORECON THURSDAY, JULY 31, 1947 Federal Rent Control Men Pass Buck To Local Areas WASHINGTON, July SI iF The federal rent control office, with a warr, eye on congress, hsi decided atalnst further action on 1U own to lift eeilinira from any of the 614 area remaining under control Future policy, an agency offlclM told a reporter privately today, will be for the federal office to check the decontrol qufttlon to the local advisory boards authorised under the hew rent law enacted last month. Although the law provides that Bousing Expediter Frank R. C roe don, who administers rent regula tions, may lift ceilings If condi tions warrant, it also gives the local boards a strong voice In their own areas. No Delay The official emphasised that the new policy Is not delaying any de control actions "since none are up for approval at present." However, he said that should the agency before the boards are set up for . business develop evidence that decontrol "might be warranted" in any of the areas, "it likely would wait for recommendations from the local board rather than going ahead on Its own." Another official said Information which "might lead to decontrol of some 'rlnge sections of several areas" is being gathered and will be sub mitted "when the boards are ready to begin their studies." "Certainly congress wanted the boards to have a strong voice In op eration of the new law," this official said, "and It seems only right they should pass on decontrol matters." Dp To Congress Congress when It returns In Jan uary will have to decide shortly whether It Wants to extend controls beyond February 39, the new expira tlo date. Control officials said It Is up to the various governors "to decide how quickly the boards will begin functioning." Under terms of Uie new control act which became law July 1, Creedon was directed to appoint local boards of at least five mem bers each on recommendations sub mitted by the governors. But In the month that has elapsed, only nine governors have submitted lists and area boatdi In only two state Georgia and Wyoming haw been approved. Other recommendations received were from North Carolina, Oregon. New Jersey, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Indiana and Alabama, rent control officials said. Honesty Still Best Policy PITTSBURGH, July 31 iP Robert Peasner. 19-year-old navy veteran, is convinced It pas's to be honest even when you're hungry and find a wallet containing $96. Peasned and his 18-year-old bride, Charlotte, had no breakfast yes terday when they came upon the wallet while trudging from bank to loan company trying to borrow 1250 to buy furniture in an apartment they sought to lease. The young veteran told Police Lieut Lawrence Maloney the $96 looked mighty big. "I said to Charlotte, "maybe we could buy a lunch and then return the rest,' but she said, "no, we'll take It all to the police station'." The owner of the wallet claimed her money and gave the Peasners $6 with which they bought lunch. Then they started out again to bor row that $250 for furniture.
