Frequent slowdowns developed after a moderately fast start. Trends were only slightly mixed until the final hour when more urgent offer ings put a number of plvotals at bottom for the day. There was a smattering of new highs for the year. Minus signs ranging from fractions to 3 points or so. predom inated at the close. Transfers for the full proceedings were around 1,100,000 shares. In the casualty section were U. S. Steel. Bethlehem, Youngstown 8heet, General Motors, Chrysler, U. S. Rubber, Goodrich. Goodyear, International Harvester. Western Union "T," American Smelting. Air Reduction, American Can, DuPont, Allied Chemical, Union Carbide. Santa Fe. N. Y. Central, Southern Pacific Great Northern Railway. Baltimore s Ohio. Chesapeake : Ohio. American Woolen. '24 Grain Price Shows Drop CHICAGO, July 28 A'A heavy movement of grain from the coun try today undermined prices for the bread cereal of the board of trade. Wheat dropped "around 3 cents at times. Minor rallies were not able to carry far In the face ol large hedging pressure. Wheat receipts at five southwest ern terminals today totaled 3930 cars against 1712 cars a year ago. Visible supply of the grain InorciiMfd this week by 23. 033.000 bushels, bringing the total supply to 65,7-6,-000 bushels. Neither corn nor oats were able to display much strength. At one time corn rallied sharply on buy, Ing by commercial houses, but the grain was not able to get far above Saturday's close: oats lastied throughout the session. Early strength in lard ran into hedging from packers. Wheat closed 2.-3sc lower. Sep. tember 3 3m-2 31. corn was l"t l',c lower. September $2.07 -'v-S. and oats were 1.-2 ,c lower.
