The nationalist government at Nanking is trying to ride a whirlwind. a a Bloody Fighting THE civil war is producing widespread and bloody fighting. Oenerallsslmo Chiang Kai-shek's fresh offensive to try to deliver a knock-out blow to the red armies finds the communists not only holding their own but on the initiative generally, with Man churia and great reaches of Northern China largely In their hands. And Nanking says that the Chinese reds are receiving aid from the Russians. As one surveys tills chaos, and the elements which are contributing to It, there would eeem to be only one way out tor Chiang Kai-shek and his government, and it Is tills: 1. To fling enough military force against the com munist armies to cripple them and hold them down, uid then, 3. To do a thorough Job ot house-cleaning In the Nanking government, and Inaugurate sweeping re forms attractive enough to win back that portion ot the Chinese population which has forsaken Nanking to chose communistic rainbows. Of these two essentials, the first obviously presents an obstacle which may be unsurmountable. The fi nancing ot an all-out war by Chiang's armies against the Chinese communists would run Into countless billions ot dollars, a sum which would stagger the Imagination ot the only nation in the world capable Df producing It the United States. Not only would there be the huge military expenditures, but mean time the economic machine ot the country would have to be kept running full tilt. Who Back Reds? SUCH an operation might easily last for years and the outcome would be problematical, for there are intangibles involved. The most Important of these Is whether Nanking has the right Informa tion In saying that Moscow Is backing the Chinese reds. If Russia is giving such assistance, the situa tion looks grim indeed. There is a school which holds that the Chinese communists aren't the some brand as the Russians that the Celestials are Just discontented Agrarians. As a matter of fact General Chou En-lal. one of the top Chinese communists, told me In 1943 at Chungking that there was no connection between Moscow and Chinese communism. However, there are many observers who think otherwise, and they don't overlook the tact that the late Dr. Sun Yat-sen. father of the Chinese republic, called in several Russian communists as advisers and that the forma tion of a communist party resulted. It doesnt take much Imagination to believe that Chinese communism and Russian communism aren't far apart. A program commemorating this occasion has been planned, highlighting the peacetime activities of the AAF, and is called "The Winged Samari tans." This program may be heard over KFLW from 10 to 10:30 a. m. That fine fellow, Bill Wentworth down at KFJI took the hint I put in this column a lew'doys ago and sent me down a blurb. One of the most noteworthy programs he men tioned Is the 15-minute commentary every day of Fulton Lewis Jr., broadcast from the nation's capital. I is aired at 4 p. m.. and is re broadcast Monday. Wednesday and Friday evenings at 10 p. m.. Bill claims the Friday spot Is somewhat Indefinite. Sometimes the wrestlers don't decide to go home until after 10. Making with the publicity stunt is a character called Johnny Olsen. who is the emcee of a program called "Ladles be Seated." The cap tion says the little creature nuzzling the microphone Is a porcupine, and was donated by a considerate fan. If you remember a comment I made on the mighty hunter, Wynant Hubbard, who was going to try to break the bank on the program of the same name last night, you will recall I said It would be a regret table thing If he were to win. The reason for this opinion was that he planned to spend the money on a wild animal capturing expedition, and I feel for the poor things. Hub bard lost, so it will be my pleasure to Inform ; '1 the wild animals of my acquaintance that one of their op presses is unable to take the field against them. The house which was built at several different times resembles the Win chester house In California, having as many additions as rooms. One couple who rented a cabin at Summit lodge decided to regain some of the money they were out for renting the place by taking with them the utensils and dishes when they left. Elmer Adklson has also discovered that a carburetor was stolen out of a boct docked near his place. The Adkisons have lost gasoline and 20 pieces of pipe this summer. Mr. and Mi's.' Leslie Newton of Portland are camping at Trapper creek campground. The Newtons have come to Odell for the past 19 or 17 years. Lost week guests from Minnesota, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Tut tle, their daughter. Ocraldine, and Tuttle's mother, who Is a cousin of Newton, were there. The Tuttles are touring the western states In their car. Mrs. A. C. Nagel spent several days last week visiting friends In Klamath Falls. The thermometer dropped to 40 degrees Monday evening, and the natives were looking for a snow storm. Jack Mclssner was a Eugene visi tor over the week-end.
