There was some comeback around midday, a subsequent stumble and stiffening of quotations here and there In the final hour with motors and special Issues attracting short covering and mild investment de mand, dealings were relatively quiet throughout While a number of leaders retained gains at the close, many losers persisted. Trans fers were in the neighborhood of 1.300,000 shares compared with Monday's 1,680,000. Among new 1947 highs were Chrysler and McOraw Electric, up a point or so each. Phillips-Jones added about 4 on a big earnings Jump. Resistant were Virginia-Carolina Chemical, Quantan.mo Su gar, Studebaker, Hudson Motors, Willys-Overland and Nash-Kelvi-nator.
