Contests you'll see on the dusty floor of the arena grew out of just such
gatherings as the one pictured above in a photograph made by Gib Fleet
on the Obenchain ranch in the Bly country. Here a recalcitrant calf bawls
his way through a branding operation in a setting that is typical Western,
and typical Klamath.
The portrayed action hard, sweating business on the ranch is the.
counterpart of a major event of the rodeo programmed as calf roping
What is real work on the ranch becomes thrilling entertainment at the rodeo.
So, in the pages of this special section The Herald and News presents the
picture story of the ranches of the Klamath basin combined with action in
the rodeo arena.
The Klamath Basin Rodeo Is one of the best of scores of rodeos being
held throughout the West this time of year. It's rodeo season, and the cow
hands who follow this great American sport are on the move, following a
hazardous but oftimes lucrative game, '
First contests were held between individuals in matched events dur
ing roundup-celebrations each fall. Top cowboys from the bigger cattle
outfits were picked to contest their ability at riding and roping while heavy
betting was done . between, their . buddies and foremen." The first contest
open to all cowboys was held in Prescott, Ariz., July 4, 1888, with prizes for
winners and an admission charged to spectators.
The experiment proved so successful that more and more such contests
were held until rodeo is now one of the leading sports of the nation from
the highfalutin affair held at Madison Square Garden to the informal but'
thrill-packed summer rodeos held at. Beatty on the Klamath Indian reserva
