He came out here, got a start In the film Industry and went up like a champagne cork. He now is a leading Independent producer, as sociated with Mary Plckford. Most producers merely supervise pictures. Lester lives his. He throws himself head foremost Into every detail from casting the film to selling it. He would turn the camera crank, too, but I don't be lieve he holds a union card. After watching him plnwheel around a studio, I remarked won derlngly: . "He does 'everything but ' write the script," "He rewrites thatl" moaned a man by me who turned out to be a script writer. Lester wears out assistant, writers, directors, actors and sten ographers like a beaver full of ben zedrine cutting through a atraw forest. But what won my admira tion waa his two-fisted skill with a telephone. He can dial two phones while carrying on three conversa tions, and he always gels the right number. He ha called up every body but Alexander Graham Bell, and would get him except there's no connection. He doesn t produce movie. He phone them. Favorite Couple He and his pretty wile, Ann Ron ell, the well-known composer, are my favorite Hollywood couple. They are fine hosts. They Invited us out one evening recently to what Lester called their new "small country olaee" In Ban Fernando valley. When we got there it turned out to be a 40-acre ranch rimmed by a private bridle path. There were three beautifully furnished houses on the estate, a swimming pool, paddock, stables and hot and cold showers for Lester's four blooded horses. "How do the horses know If the shower is the right temperature?" I asked the trainer. "They stick in their hoof first to see," gravely suggested the small son of one of the house guests. I was surprised Cowan didn't hire the boy on the spot. . Later we stood by the pool as it reflected the dusk-purpling hills. Moved by the twilight beauty, Cowan said very seriously: "It's all quite simple out here. We want to keep It that way. We didn't want to bring Hollywood out here." Well, that's Lester my "Mr. Hollywood." After all, some pro ducers would have built two darn swimming pools, and ruined the whole rustic atmosohere of that simple four-horse dell. Dr. John A.
