Guest Editorial By PAUL LEE THE people of Klamath Falls are soon to have an opportunity to decide whether or not they will support a YMCA building program. Letters were mailed this week to all service, clubs, organisations and Interested groups. The "Y" board will, to a large degree, be guided In the matter , of the building program by a cross-section of public opinion. Several years ago when a YMCA program was Indicated there seemed to be some local ml under standing a to the type and purpose of such a step. At the present time this feeling seems to have been largely dissipated and wherever one goes now people are showing- Increased Interest In the YMCA. The question now confronting us Is whether or not this Interest will be sustained to the point of raising a considerable sum for. a physical plant, including a swimming pool and gymnasium. The recent action by the Teen Age club sponsors in asking the "Y" to take over the Teen Age program Is at best only in temporary headquarters at the armory. These quarters are cramped and do not lend themselves to this type of program, but at the present time they represent the best location available. The Teen Age club, of course, would have the use of faculties of the entire YMCA building. Recent surveys by the national YMCA building committee indicate that drives have gone over suc cessfully in Medford, Aberdeen and that a drive is currently being succesful in Eomonion. Aiocna. a permanent YMCA community course offer its complete facilities . it .her la no YWCA program Is geared to take care of women and girls, as well as men and boy. It seems that there is no perfect time for any money raising project. While the "Y" board is well aware that building costs are high at present, this is 'offset by the fact that the money supply is also Secretary of State Marshall's program for economic above normal. Conversely In periods of cheap con- rehabilitaUon. British newspapers deduced from the atruction the money supply is tight, so a reduced tone of Bevln's speech that France and England amount would probably be as hard to raise. The "Y" had made up their minds to go ahead with the task board is aware of the task tney are uuucriauua wu iaiu uuwu uy ixii mau uikvivuib iwi" baUeve that if the public spirited citizens of Klamath Soviet Union decided to participate. The World Today By DeWITT MacKENZIE Associated Press Foreign News Analyst THI column yesterday called attention to the fact that the current investigation of ownership and control of the British press by England's socialist regime launched some time1 ago amidst an outcry among communists and fellow travelers for regi mentation of newspapers has been causing uneasy speculation as to whether this Indicates a further leftist tendency by the government. We now have a sensational clarification of the government's policies In British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevln's blistering "shirtsleeve" speech In commons, telling Russia bluntly what the score of International relations Is and in Prime Minister Altlee's pointedly anti-Russian speech before a min ers' rally' In Bamstey today, in which he declared that "so-called democratic government Is a travesty" In "several countries of Eastern Europe." a a a Firm Stand Token BEVIN one of the most outspoken of England's major public figures flatly declared himself against "one-party" government (totalitarian). He said he would regret a conflict between Ideologies "but If It is forced upon us we must face It." He didn't believe that InAne long run the western world would be the sufferers in event of a conflict, because the many dictators who have tried to suppress liberty In the world have failed. T, w. : , q a sat, ore. m "Now don't ay you really you mean it last time we without A promise made is a debt unpaid, or so the saying goes. Yesterday I promised you an example of ye complete blurb. The picture above accompanied a sponsor blurb (de scribed yesterday) about the Wal green Anniversary show, which you listened to Thursday night if you took my advice. For purposes of in struction the caption was left with the picture. Usually the caption is so corny it cannot be used. Quoting directly from the lead paragraph of the blurb It seems that: "The nation's top ranking comedy stars of screen and radio fame will be heard coast to coast when the Walgreen Drug Stores present a special one hour broad cast celebrating the company's 46th anniversary over Station KFJI from 8 to t p. m. on June 10." Now. seriously, that particular lead paragraph is more Informative and less effusive than the average blurb lead. It Includes station, time, date and length of the broad cast, all of which are Imoortant, as well as a reference to the type of program to be aired. It only deviates from the straight and nar row with the claim that THE top comedy stars of both screen and radio will be heard. We have shown the plx and demonstrated the pertinent Infor mation included In a blurb. Now, let's consider some of the descrip tive literature. Here are excerpta taken from the Walgreen blurb which ably demonstrate this as pect: "This special show guaran teed to be the biggest laugh-filled hit on the air . . .": "It Is pro duced with only one aim in mind, that of squeezing as much mirth aa possible Into 60 minutes." "Guar anteed to be the launh-hlt high light of the year. . . ." Aftr reading three- or more pages of material like that It be comes impossible to Imagine how anyone would willfully miss such a program. The reason so many people do miss programs such as this is generally because they do not have access to blurbs. At some future date this column will be devoted to a dissertation on certain other asnccta of the radio publicity game. For now, remember when you see "it says here" In this column, it refers to a blurb. HOUSE BURGLAR EAST PEORIA. 111.. June 31 (IP) j Police here are looking for a stolen , house. I Earl A.
