Specific figures on a few of the more noteworthy upward revisions, as given by Seavey, are as follows: The Individual flat rate would In crease from $3.25 to $3.75. Two party rate would increase from $2.75 to $3 00. No increase In lour party rates. The business rate would be increased, with the Individual busi ness flat rate advancing from $4.75 to $6.50. In the matter of toll rates the general picture would be something like this: Rates would increase sraduallv UD to a distance of 133 miles; remain practically the same from 133 miles to 175 miles: de crease from 5c to 45c for distances bevond 175 miles. Had the company done so the busi ness rate in the year 1930 could have been $600 pes month. Actually, it was, and is $4.75 per month. In the telephone business. Seavey contended, there Is an economic law which supersedes the one about an increase in volume bringing down unit cost. According to Seavey. unit cost actually has Increased along with the increase In the telephone company's volume of business. The reason for thu apparent con tradiction of economic law Is that so much more service Is performed by the telephone .company per unit than was the case even as little as ten years ago. Increased mileage (miles of telephone lines per tele phone), Increased cost of mainten ance and rapid technological changes have forced the company to expend an ever greater amount of money per telephone Installed, Sea vey. asserted. Hearing Set The recent wage increases, ac cording to Seavev. only served to emphasise the fact that pre-war rates are not enough to meet post war costs.
