Murder In Flower Patch
Slaying Of 4 Companions
Await 'Start Of Trial

murder In the (lower-patch slaying

v.ilh the murder of 16-year-old Bar
bara Smith, oldest of the four vic
tims and "girl friend" of Terpen
nltm. The bodies of three girls and a
boy, bouquet of flowers clutched
In their hands, were found- late
Monday near a swampy gravel pit
They were Barbara. 16, Gladys,
13, Janet, 2, and Stanley, 14: chil
dren of Mr. and Mrs. William
Smith, living on a farm nine miles
northeast of here.
Terpennlng was turned over to
Ohio authorities shortly After a mo
torist gave him a ride as he hitch
hiked south toward the Michigan
Ohio line.
Police officials In both states said
he admitted shooting the children
about 3 p. m. Monday but that he
gave no reason for his set.
Sgt. Carl Stem of the Michigan
state police past at Eric. Mich., said
the high school boy appeared to be
"inna fog."
The youth, a "boy friend" of the
slain Barbara Smith, hiid been the
object of a statewide hunt since on

the bodies.

found dead of bullet wounds In the
backs of their head. The boy was.

Wallace Talks

Former Vice President Henry A.
Wallace warned of a "century of
fear" in a speech here last night
and said It would result from the
Truman doctrines In foreign policy
and "one party coalition" lu con
gress. Wallace also colled for interna
tionalization of the Panama canal,
the Dardanelles and the Suez canal
as steps vital to eliminate the causes
of war. He said the control by one
country of these strategic areas
"tends to break up peace."
He told an audience of 3000 the
nation was heading for a depres
sion, and said a reduction of prices
and raising of wages where passible
must be accompanied by loans to
European and Asiatic nations to
raise their standards of living.
He denounced John Tabor, chair
man of the house appropriations
