West of town, they woke us up to tell us It was raining In our country. Those moving windshield , wipers, and the shiny surface of the highway, re flecting the lights of oncoming cars, provided a thrill that took the sleep out of our eye. We can't remember a season In our residence in this country when a rain storm was more welcome. Viewing The Future MEDFORD looks good. There's a great deal, of building activity In our neighboring community on the west, including many business structures. People over there take seriously the theory that there U going to be a vast movement to the West, and they think Southern Oregon Is going to get a generous share of the population Increase. There are some conservatives who think maybe the town la over-developing Itself, but they are to tha minority. Most Medfordites seem to be warmly enthusiastic about the future. Those with broader' viewpoints think the whole Southern Oregon country. Including Southwestern Oregon and the Klamath region, are In for an era of prosperous development. We talked with John Boyle, vice president and general manager of the California Oregon Power company, which aervea the area we have been talking about. His views about the Klamath country will be especially interesting to readers of this column. He rate our area as tops for potential development in the region served by his company. . In short, the royal family belongs to the people, and this is particular ly true of the sovereign and of the heir to the throne. Edward was born to rule. He was schooled in kingcraft Irom babyhood until as a young man he was the best equip ped of all the many heirs to Eng land's crown. I know many obser vers who believe that had he stuck with the Job to which fate assigned him, he could have been the great est sovereign England ever had known. So now apart from any personal feelings about the very charming if much-wed duchess both the royal family and the government are ap plying refrigeration to the duke and duchess in order to protect the mon archyto redeem Edward's abdica tion in the eyes of his people. For the first time they had the democratic party together In one fold, the Oeorges and Byrds Truman and his treasury secretary. muster that thorough unanimity reduction proposal Itself. Further more the democrats had a good argument. They wanted delay until they could see how much the republicans cut the Truman budget, claiming there ihould be no tax reduction until the figures on rconomles show Justification. The inside explanation of how the steam went town I hear Is this: Mr. Snyder and the treasury crowd got up some advance figures on expectations of June 15 Income tax receipts. They thought such a survey would show a decline and put the republicans in a deeper hole. ' a a a Justify Veto THEY reasoned that If thty, the democrats, could keep the tax reduction bill away from the White House until the second quarter tax receipts were announced, Mr. Truman could Justify a veto. Unfortunately their survey showed the opposite. The treasury actuaries are supposed to have found receipts will -not only be unexpectedly up, but up beyond their latest budget estimates, thus affording more opportunity than waa expected for tax reduction and debt retirement. Certain top republicans in congress found out about these figures and changed their strategy. It teems Messrs. Knudsen and Tabor, the house re publican fiscal directors, decided not to attempt to go through with their plan to hold the tax bill In conference after It passes the senate. You read of their plan In this spot last week. They thought that if they held the bill In conference after it passe the senate until the fiscal year closes June 30, the treasury figures would show full Justification tor their reduction bill, even though they had been unable to economize-as much as they expected. Senator Taft was supposed to be willing. But treasury estimators can get a fairly trust worthy line on such figures in advance. They know the state of business and individuals and can reckon at this late date (only about three weeks in advance of the second quarter payments and five weeks before the end of the fiscal year) fairly thoroughly as to what to expect. a a a a Changed Position WHEN the republicans heard about these figures as I say, they changed position. Taft decided to press for immediate action despite his loss of Byrd and Oeorge and the so-called conservative democrat. They could see there was no need to wait They might Just as well push the thing right up to Mr. Truman any old time at their convenience. At least this Is the story as I get it, and it fully explains the shennanigans you see in the new. About a veto, the republicans profess not to know. ' They apparently have no worthwhile Information. But they do feel it will be more difficult tor Mr. Truman to veto in the light of this new forthcoming statistical situation of the treasury. Most republican leader say privately they bop he does' veto because they will fail of the necessary two-thirds majority In the senate only by a small margin, it they do fail, and then. In that case Mr. Truman and a few democratic senators will have to take the public responsibility for blocking tax reduction which would not aid then- popularity with taxpayers. My Information all in all Indicates Mr. Truman will sign the tax reduction and veto the labor union reform bill, but it is not direct or conclusive.: Well Cave-In Kills Man DUNSMUIR. May 27 Burled un der 14 feet of earth, the body of Kenneth Lenslng, proprietor of Abrams lake resort Bear here, was removed by the ML Shasta rescue squad at 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon following an hour and a halt of frantic digging to tree the victim. Lenslng was digging a well on the property when a wall caved in. The rescue squad was called at 3:30 p.m. but it was not until shortly before 5 odock that Lenslng s body was reached. Lenslng purchased the re sort, half way between ML Shasta and Dunsmuu-. a short time ago and waa improving the property. The body is at ML Shasta. New Discus Record Claimed V1SALIA. Calif.. Kermit Storli Dies In Wreck Kermit Oscar Storli. 39-year-old navy veteran, was killed Instantly about o'clock Friday night on a Siskiyou county road en route to Merrill when a new fire truck he was driving from San Jose, Calif., to Portland, overturned. Storli has two sisters at Merrill, Mrs. Frank Paygr and Mrs. Ed Petrasek, both well-known in that vicinity, and young Storli spent on summer on the Paygr place six miles east of Merrill. He was re cently discharged from the navy with the rank of lieutenant com mander. The young man was employed as salesman with the Nelson Equip ment company of Portland. He was driving a new type truck which was to be displayed at a fire chiefs con vention in Portland this week and later delivered to the city of Walla Walla, Wash., which had purchased the machine. Storli apparently failed to make a curve and the truck went out of control, crashing Into a borrow pit. Storli was thrown clear but the truck came down on his body, partially decapitating him. The body was found by Jim Stevenson of Macdoel, formerly of Merrill, btorii had apparently taken a short cut to Merrill from the main highway and was traveling on a Sis kiyou county road In order to cut his time lor a visit with his sisters. The body was moved to Upton's mortu ary in Weed and final rites will be held In Portland. Storli was born February 14. 1918. at North Bend. Ore. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar T. Storli of Portland who survive. Vet Summer Leave Notices Urged Veterans In school under the OI bill who wish to receive subsistence while taking leave this summer are urged to get advance application in to the veterans administration's ! regional office In Portland or to uicir va miming u.iilci . May 27 (Port land food prices, 201.4 per cent above the 1935-39 average, were at an all time high in April, the U. S. bureau of labor statistics reported today. April's prices were 1.7 per cent above those for March, the bureau said. 33 per cent above April 1M. and 110 per cent above the August 1939 level. The vote slapped down a motion by Senator George ID-Ga.l to post pone consideration of the measure until June 10. It also practically assured pas sage later this week of legislation for a graduated tax reduction, rang ing from 30 per cent In the loweat Income brackets to 10 5 per cent In the hlghesL The house already has approved a similar reduction but voted to make it effectlv u ot last Jan uary 1. Defeat of the Oeorge motion leaves the bill open to amendment, including a proposal by Senator Lucas iD-IU.l to postpone any re duction until next January 1.
