DiractM Boyle's Column College Patter Follows A Pattern, But With Changes By HAL I10YLB COLUMBIA, Mo., May 13 IJft ilere I a sample of modern co-ed cninpu slang at the University of Missouri ; "I 'm bushed I One of the Yo-Yo boy sluing next to me In a basket court tried to pas me hi growl in a whizz quiz. 'Shoot a bear,' I told him because I didn't think It was a good lick. "He wa a four-wheeled personal ity but I would only go out with him strictly from hunger. Yeah, one of those 'get me' boy. Told me ha had been breaking In a new ulcer and had the clanks from pur ple passion. "Personally, I Just thought he had rocks In hi head zero gizmo. You should have heurd hi snow lob! Could be bolvlatcl Maid he liked my llpmack. Asked me to put my feet In the trough but I knew he Just wanted to play kiss on the mouth. "I gave him the fluff but he tried to twist my arm. Finally I had to tell him to drink hi beer. What kind of a bimbo did he think I am? I've got my own swuity. I'd never get Uie deep undying hots for that rah rah colutch." Quick Changes Slang change quickly. Here is the way a co-ed might have started off on the same thing when I was learning the King's English on this tame campus fifteen years ago: "I'm beaten down to the ankles! A wise guy sitting next to me in a tough course wanted to pass me Ins crib notes during a snap quiz. 'Nuts,' I told him because I thought It was a bad go." A nice lady of the class of 1890 would probably have written her mother of the Incident a follows: "I am so worried, mother dear. A fresh young man seated next to me In a difficult course attempted to smuggle me hit 'pony' a transla tion of our Latin text he had no right to have during an examina tion on which I found easy to pass. 'Certainly not,' I Informed him as I did not approve of any such Im proper action. "He owns a horse and buggy, mother, but I would hesitate to go out In hi compuny even to get a cup of tea. Yes, he Is fearfully conceited. He explained that he was highly nervous from overin dulgence In a beverage called the 'purple passion," which I believe la a shocking mixture of grapejulce and alcohol. Our authorities, of course, do riot approve of such con duct, nor, you may be sure, do I. Kccentrle Individual "I am convinced he Is an eccentric Individual with no quality of char acter. Mother dear, you should have heard the flattery he addressed me. It was so ludicrously exaggerated! He praised the natural color of my lips, comparing them to ripened cherries. He Invited me to ac company him to dinner, but I real ized that his true motive was a desire to shower his unwelcome at tentions upon my person. "I rejected hit proposals but he renewed them more insistently. At length I found it necessary to re quest him to be silent. What nature of girl do you think he thought your daughter? A you know, I have already pledged by affection to an other. But even were this not to, I should never be able to give my heart Into the keeping of that brash and pompous young man." Oh. you kid.
