Brazilian Police Padlock Communist Clubs In Drive To Enforce Outlaw Bill RIO DE JANEIRO, May 8 W The Bratlllan government cracked down hard on the communist party today, with federal police and troops padlocking 445 communist clubs or cells to enforce a decision by the supreme electoral tribunal outlaw ing the party in Brazil. The tribunal approved, by a 3 to 3 vote lost night, a government peti tion asking that the Brazilian com munist party one of the largest In the western hemisphere be de clared Illegal and closed. In the last election, in January, the party polled about 800,000 votes. It eleoted 17 deputies and one senator In the federal congress, 18 members of this capital's 60-member city council, 80 members of various slate legislatures and helped to elect the governors of eight Brazilian states. Obey Order The senator, Luis Carlos Prestes, who la secretary general of the Brazilian communist party, cabled all the party's branches Immediate ly after yesterday's decision, order ing them to obey the verdict calmly. He said the decision would be ap pealed to the Brazilian supreme court and announced that the par ty's national convention, scheduled for May 25 In Rio, had been post poned Indefinitely. But even as the tribunal's judg ment was being announced the com munists suffered another stiff blow. President Eurico Oaspar Dutra sus pended the communist - supported Brazil Workers confederation and all labor unions affiliated with It for a period of six months. Communist leaders referred sar castically to the decision as "the first step for Dutra's continuation in power like (former President Oe tulloi Vargas." "We are awaiting calmly the final decision of Brazilian Justice." Prestes declared. "For the dominant classes the Brazilian communist party al ready has been 'annihilated' many times, but it Is still alive." Klamath Men Get Buildings Three Klamath Falls men ob tained surplus buildings at the re cent war assets administration sale at Camp White for dismantling or off-site use. when 960 of the 1350 buildings listed went to Southern Oregon buyers.
