The Herald and Newt inaugurate a sen of travelogue Intended to Indicate, In word and picture,., inlereaung automobile trips available to Klamatn people the area in the lust opening. Anyone with a touring can find to to in the family car In this country. There are interesting short loop trips which can be made In an hour or two. There are longer Journeys thai will tak all day. We well remember a trip of I arreral years ago that took us to Alluras. Davis creek, across Fan- EPLEY dango pass to Surprise valley. Port Bldwell. and north through Warner valley to Plush. Turning homeward, we crossed the high flat to Warner canyon, into Lake lew, and home by the always-pleasant Klamath Falls-Lakeview high way. All In one day. mind you. with breakfast at Alturas, lunch at Fort Bidwell. and dinner at Lake view. That's a rather long one. but it is indicative of what one can do if he really want to sec the country. A shorter version of the trip is to make the familiar loop by Alluras and Lakeview. leaving out the Surprise valley and Warner valley diversions. There arc several loop trips available by using different route over the Cascade mountains, or going to Weed and returning by one of the Cascade cross ings after a norths ard jaunt up the Pacific highway. The Cascade resorts can be reached by a variety of route, and the Bend country has many interesting feature for those taking longer trips. Crater lake and the Lava Beds monument of course, are major offerings worth visiting at least once each touring These suggestions aren't intended to be inclusive, but only Indicative of touring pleasure that is avail able for people of the Klamath country with a bit of wonder lust in them. Harold Powell is leader of the forestry 1 group and Spike Arm (irong. of the forestry 2 group. David Steckner and Dan Schoenberg re ceived red ribbon, and Eddie Angus and Rex Dillavow placed with white-ribbons. A camping trip to Dog lake for the week-end of May 3 and 4 is be ing planned for the boys who enter exhibits. Forty thousand ponderosa pine seedling will be planted on the old burn on Paradise mountain on the Bly ranger district within the next 10 days. The seedlings were grown at the Wind Hirer nursery and shipped parked in ice. They arrived in ex cellent condition. A planting camp is being established at the scaler eabuT up Fishhole creek. About 10 men will be -employed to plant the seedlings: They will be planted at six .foot intervals in rows eight feet apart. The hotel cafe, which has been closed for the past two weeks, opened April 26. President Aleman the previous day. in his address before a joint session of congress, had made another point: 'Fortunately in recent times both of us (America and Mexico) have learned a few things. We have learned that isolation is not a good formula for living; that it is not good tactic for security." It is a striking coincidence that a the Mexican president was delivering his speech, the chief execu tive of another great Latin American country Presi dent Juan Peron of Argentine was saying the same thing. General Peron told his congress that isola tion no longer was possible and that Argentina must share world problems. He declared that foresight was necessary in the midst of an armed world, and an nounced that he intended to modernize the Argentine army. General Peron didn't interpret his remarks, and I think we should be rash to do it for him. It is better to wait and see. Chiloquin Mr. and Mrs. Lou Kelllson spent Friday in the Mrdford district, visit ing former residents. Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Robertson and Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Evans. Kathryn Wampler has been chief cook and bottle washer at the Paul Wampler home this past week while her parents were in Woodland. Calif., preparing to bring the cattle north for the pasture months. Mr. and Mrs. Okel Bowline of. Gardenia. Calif., are in town visiting with relatives, the Hobacks and the Peters. They plan to be here for this first week of the fishing season. Mrs. Bert Albert spent several days last week in Grant Pass and brought her brother. Leonard Hall, back for a short visit. Hall Is still recuperating from injuries in a serious automobile wreck which took place about one year ago. Word was received over the week end that Earl Covington, husband of CHS alumnus Jewel Pagan, crashed in a flight near his home in Alameda. Calif., on Tuesday. He remained unconscious until Satur day and then was given a fifty-fifty chance of survival. The Covington have a baby just four months old. The junior class Is working in dustriously under a veil of secrecy on the nearly completed plans for the annual junior reception and prom which will be held on Satur day. May 3. Winding up a week as Ernie Pyle memorial lecturer at Indiana uni versity. I find myself even more of a stranger to campus life than I expected 15 years alter thry stuck a sheepskin into my hands and foisted me off on a defenseless world. I have a depressing feeling that present day students are a lot drier behind the ears than friends I slrpt through classes with half a genera tion ago. They take their work and play and life in general more seriously than we ever did. Either that or as I suspect thry regard me as too old and doddering at jo to or ici in on what really 1 going on in undergraduate life. When I was studying to get what euphemistically was called an edu cation, everybody was convinced the piece orchestra from Klamath Falls will play for the public semi-formal prom, ine crowning oi and her court will be the midnight climax of the affair. The girls will be chosen by the Juniors from the nitre girls of the senior class. Marvin' Nerseth. son of Dr and Mrs. Marvin Nerseth of Klamath Falls, was a week-end guest of David McKell. The newlrweds. Mr. and Mr. Reno DeBortoli, returned Saturday noon from a week-long honeymoon and are now at home in South Chiloquin. Mr. and Mr. Don Potter figure that prune wa a mighty expensive one. It wa given to their son, Den nis, and the young man decided to eat the pit and all. As a result, an overnight stay in the hospital and a bit of probing by a doctor wa re quired before the too-large bite wa recovered. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Reath left for Springfirld on Sunday to attend funeral services for the parents of Mrs. Heath. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Smith. Final rite for Frank Savage of N'yssa called his daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Nie haus, to Eastern Oregon on Sunday. Savage was a local resident for many years. Bill Pohll suffered a severe arm Injury on Tuesday morning when his hand was caught in a roller at the planer mill and crushed up to the shoulder. For several hours it was thought that the arm might have to be amputated but by evening circulation had been restored. Mrs. Nels Nicholson and daughter Jane are leaving this Saturday to Join Mr. Nicholson in Dillard. Jane will have finished her school require ment by that time. Or so he felt the next morning. secret Aamiratloo I used to have a poor boy s secret admiration for gilded students who were living op to the old definition of college as "a four-year loaf on fathers dough." There are fewer of these campus aristocrat about these days. There isn't room for them. The veterans who make better grades are crowd ing them out. The chief signs of dissipation I have noted on the Indiana campus are mass tendencies on the part of the men student to tear down their digestive tracts with overstuffed hamburgers and to wear out their eye reading pinoall score. I sup pose the pinoall machines teach them coordination. They will need thi later in dealing with the atom bomb and other problems of their adult years. Questions asked me by fledgling Journalism student Indicate they are wiser and more mature yes, and better informed than I was. I thought the most Important thing in the world at their age was to learn how to yell, brackety-ackety-ack. Now I'm afraid that when these "hopes of tomorrow" leap over the campus walls to take our jobs the only thing left for us tarnished hopes of yesterday to do will be go back to school and start training for the day after tomorrow.
