Klamath Bills Fared Well At Legislature Say Solons On Return To Homes Here Klamath county fared well at the 1047 legislative session on measures ol particular interest here, it was pointed out by Rep resentative Henry Semon when he returned from Salem. Senator Marshall Cornett, Rep. resentative Rose Poole and Rep resentative Semon were all home Tuesday after the record length session, and all agreed they were badly in heed of rest. Last days of the session were unusually gruelling, they said. Major measure of local inter est was that to finance a tech nical school at the Marine V-r-lacks. After a icr es of uos and downs, the Marine BarracK? ap propriation bill for $620 000 came out of the ways and means committee with a favorablj re port and passed both houses by a large majority. Semon said that a Klamath delegation, which went to Salem to appear before the ways and means sub-committee in charge of this bill, made a "very rea sonable and straightforward pre sentation." The legislator said that ' Klamath people must now take a real interest in making the school a success." Klamath Basin Roundup asso ciation will get $5000 from the state dog racing fund as a re sult of action taken at the legis lative session, Semon said. Thus, Klamath will share with the Pendleton Roundup and other enterprises over the state in a manner not heretofore in effect Street Lighting Another measure of local in terest was an enabling act pro viding for formation of street lighting districts. The South Sixth street area, where such a district is planned, will be ef fected by this measure, which makes it possible to tax property within a district to provide for street lights. A. D. Klamath Falls was one of the sponsors of this measure. Another measure would make possible formation of rural ceme tery districts. Some interest in this measure has been shown in Klamath county. Amendments to a park district measure makes it possible for the Malin park district to put more money in a sinking fund than was heretofore allowed, in order to build up a fund for con struction purposes. Klamath people evinced con siderable interest favorable to enactment of a state community firoperty law, Semon said. This aw was passed late in the ses sion. Record Length Speaking of the record length of the 1947 session, Semon said: "Many highly important and complicated matters were be fore this legislative session. Dis tribution of $32,000,000 in school money on an equitable basis, de manded careful study. This leg islature was faced with by far the toughest state financial prob lem that 1 have soon in 14 years of legislative service. The wel fare problem in Oregon has be come most serious, in that de mands for appropriations are in creasing rapidly in what arc con sidered to be ttood times, and we had to rc-vamp the whole pro gram to take care of even a minor recession which is reason able to expect in the biennium. These are just a few of the major issues which kept the legislature long in session. People of Ore gon may as well realize that in a session confronted with prob lems like these, a job can t be done in the SO days, for which it pays its legislators." More Sugar In Prospect A moderate improvement in the sugar supply situation is in prospect, according to W, A. Bisbee, representative of the Spreckels Sugar company, who was a visitor in Klamath rails today. It is possible, he said, an extra 15 pounds may be allotted to housewives later in the year. Bisbee said that domestic pro duction appears likely to show a substantial increase, and more sugar will be coming from Cuba this year. However, the Philip pine supply will not start coming in until late in 1948. The Spreckels man said that G.I. Loan Warning Given Veterans who purchase real estate with a GI loan and then sell the property to a second party remain liable for the in debtedness until the mortgage Is fully repaid. Patrick W. Kllby, veterans administration repre sentative in this area, warned today. Reports from lending institu tions indicate some veterans arc selling property without consult ing either the lender or the VA and may not be aware of their continuing liability. Government guarantees are not transferable from one Indi vidual to another. Veterans who sell mortgaged property, unless the lending agency voluntarily releases the veteran from per sonal liability, are legally re sponsible for the indebtedness. The VA has no objection to a veteran selling property acquired with a GI loan, since its regula tions make ample provision for the transfer of GI loan mortgages by either the veteran or the there are encouraging evidences of growing interest in sugar beet production in Klamath county, with indications that about 2500 acres will be planted this year. lender without affecting the orig inal government guarantee.
