Ono visitor who came to pho tograph a much-decorated cpast guardsman found his grand daughter cracking a pecan with the congressional medul of honor. The old timer fished the rest of his medals out of a lard bucket. Ono was from the king of Greece, another was from the Brltloli government. He finally got all seven pinned on his coat. "What's that one?" said the visitor, pointing to the congres sional. "Oh, a lot of guys around here have got that," said the old surfman, and pointed with real pride to a small coast guard emblem, "Look at this one." It was for top performance on some routine coast guard train ing feat but no one on this sta tion had won it hut him. Taboo Word There Is one word you'd bet ter not mention when you are In Big Kinnakcet, a fishing village Just north of Cape HatteruB which maps list an "Avon." Tho 481) residents mostly cotstguardsmen and fishermen call themselves "Big Kinna keetcrs" and joke that their chief Import is wrecked ships. Tho word you don't say In front of any "Big Kinnakectcr" is "yaupon." Yaupon is an evergreen, thornlcss American holly. In dians used it as emetic and old settlers gave a tea made from its leaves to women in child birth. The tea was also popu larly supposed to have reju venative and aphrodisiacai properties. Many years ago during the hard times Big Kinnakcet fish ermen were reduced to gather ing yaupon and peddling it to the mainland. They drank yau pon tea themselves because they couldn't afford coffee. When a village boat ap- firoached tho shore, the main and children would set up a taunting chant: "Big Kinnakecters are well fed, they drink yaupon tea and cat corn bread." Those days are long past but the word remains so obnoxious to a Big Kinnakectcr that to use it in his presence even now is to invite a fist fight. Phono 121 CAN GET THE Ammunition Dump Scene Of Battle (Continued from Page One) of tho dead left no doubt that they were communists. The statement did not mention the number of casualties suf fered by the attackers, but Chi nese military officers reported 101) of the band killed or wound ed. These officers announced that BOO government troops from Chiang Kai-shek's second army had been dispatched from Tientsin to aid marines in track ing down the attackers, whose numbers were not known. Even as the attackers faded into the darkness from which they had struck at a marine am munition dump, a heavily-armed marine convoy was made ready at Tientsin, 25 miles to the west, to set out in pursuit. Stung by the biggest casualty toll in a long scries of clashes with north China irregulars, Col. Julian N. Frisbie, commander of the fifth marines at Peiping, was flying to Tientsin to take per sonal command. A brief marine announcement confirmed that the fighting, at llwinho, five miles west of Tangku, raged for four hours and fifteen minutes beginning at 1:15 a. m. The reports of the fighting were fragmentary, saying that one marine tank was disabled by a land mine, and that several explosions of stored ammunition rocked the dump. Marine fighter planes were called out but the Chinese had vanished before the airmen could get into action. Move To Stop Strikes Proposed WASHINGTON, AprU 5 (IP) A propor 1 designed to block "national paralysis" strikes was offered to the senate labor com mittee today as part of the pre liminary draft of a general labor bill. Senators said this tentative version which the committee plans to discuss next week pro vides, among other things, for a ban on the closed shoo and for the outlawing of Jurisdictional strikes and secondary boycotts. It would make it an unfair labor practice for a national union to dictate contract terms to its locals, but would Impose no outright ban on industry wide bargaining.
