Telephone Company Has Offered To Arbitrate r Ye have repeatedly offered to renew present liberal con tracts, but the unions have refused and have made demands which would cost about $100,000,000 per year. Some unions have " threatened to strike if these demands are not met. , Telephone people arefwell paid ... . .we want ithatway. . ' Studies show their wages compare favorably with those paid by other concerns in the community for work requiring similar skill and training. Their wage rates have been increased an average of 58 per cent in the last six years. This is in addition to regularly-scheduled raises. - - Telephone people have good working conditions. Their work is steady. They have holidays and vacations with pay. They have sickness and death benefits and pensions. Unions' Demands Yould Cost $100,000,000 This is equivalent to an average in crease of $45.00 a year in your tele phone bill and 2,300,000 others. It is equivalent to a 40 per cent in crease in all telephone rates. It is five times our 1946 earnings. It would make our payroll alone larger than all the-money we took in last year. In recognition that the public inter est comes first and to eliminate any reason for a telephone work stop page which would be a disaster for the public, the company has offered to submit to arbitration the ques tion of wages which is the funda mental issue in dispute. Differences can be settled here on the Coast Some unions are now insisting that their demands be settled on a na tionwide basis. We believe our dif ferences can better be settled here by arbitrators to be selected from a panel named by the U. S. depart ment of labor. Our contracts are with Pacific coast unions and they reflect wage con ditions as they apply here. We feel that it is better for two groups which have bargained together for years to iron out their own differ ences instead .of trying at the same time to settle all the problems that other parties may have in other parts of the country. This seems fairer to local telephone users who in the long run must pay the bill. ' A telephone strike in Oregon appar ently is: being eng ineered by "re mote control" although local means are at hand to avoid it. We believe our offer to arbitrate the wage is sue is fair to everyone.
