Irrigation, tile problem of obtaining better seed barley and better potuto marketing prac tices were issues brought up ut the March meeting of the Tule lake (Jrowcrs held Monday night In the Sportsman's hotel. Out-of-town speakers were A. E. Webb of Annhaeuscr-Uusch and Cris P. Bemis, sccretury of the potato division of the U. S. Fresh Fruit and Vegetable association. The meeting followed a 6:30 o' clock dinner. The growers recommended a spring and summer wage scale Identical with the 1946 scale for farm iubor, 75 cents per hour to be puid for weeding, hoeing, thinning and other hand work' und 1 per hour for irrigating and for truck and tractor drivers. Scale for the harvest season will be .recommended Inter. Water will be mudc available this spring by the reclamation service as soon as operation and maintenance costs have been puid by farmers, and water will probably be in the canals by April 1. The unseusonul warm wcuther with little moisture makes early irrigation impera tive lor legume crops. Some pre irrigatlon before cropping is also anticipated, growers announced. E. A. Webb of Ar.nnaeuser Busch stressed the importance of better barley seed grading and Inspection for the protection of both grower and buyer. No de cision was reached on the grad ing of seed here this fall but urowers will buy an improved seed slock from Oregon State college next fall. S. department of agriculture is carrying on a research program slanted to the use of potatoes for other purposes than food. He stated also that the 1848 bumper potato crop was raised on a smullcr acreage than in other years, indicating that growers ure using improved culture methods. C. W.
