r 'Lost Horizon11 Is Student Body Play ! The annual student body play, presented by Klamath Union high school, is scheduled for 8 o'clock Thursday night, March 27, In the auditorium, the play chosen this year being James Hilton's "Lost Horizon." "Lost Horizon" is a three-act play adapted from the novel of the same name by James Hilton. Briefly the story is about four travelers from a wrecked plane. They find shelter in Shangri-La where they are met by an elderly Chinese who tells them he has been "expecting them." Conway is fascinated by the strange atmosphere of the place and by Helen, a lovely girl whom he finds there. The breezy American is delighted to stay on indefinitely and Miss Brinklow, the prickly little missionary ladv. doesn't intend to specify iust where she will serve the ,ord. But Mallison is eager to be out of the place and on his way back to "civilization." ' In a moving scene the High Lama reveals to Conway the secret of the place . . . that peo ple do not grow old there, and that Shangri-La is dedicated to preserving the culture and wis dom of the past. Conway learns, too, that Lo Tsen, who seems so young and lovely, is really al most a hundred years old. There Is a climactic scene in which Conway reveals this to Mallison, Who is in love with the ex quisite Chinese girl and means to take her away when they leave. I In the conclusion of magnetic power. Conway is torn between his faith in Shangri-La. his love ior Helen, and the claims of Mallison. The result of all this is Ihown in the last dynamic scene. The stage set for the produc ion of Lost Horizon is original, having been designed and paint ed by the art department under the direction of Robert Ban ister. The construction of the set Was done by the manual training Hepartment under the super vision of F. Scapple. i The weird lighting of visions fnd storms was planned and Executed by the lighting and sound effects crew under the di rection of B. B. Blomquist. j The costumes were designed by the art and drama depart jnent. They are of beautiful ma terials, scintillating with se quins, with gorgeous gold and many-colored embrpidery. j The chants and music have been written and directed by John O'Connor. The vision of he High . Lama appears with supernatural effect floating over the mountain of Karakal and the' Valley of the Blue Moon. ! The Lamas, who file along the terrace to prayer as they sing the haunting chant, are mem bers of the. girls' chorus. The two Song Bearers, who sound the call to prayer, are Jerry Fales hnd Wilbur Elliot These boys are members of the boys' octet. ,The- temple dancer, ToSai Len, Is Betty Cleig, whose grace ful movement as she strikes the gong in her dance lends a high point of beauty and interest to the scene. Joan Appling, guest artist from University of Oregon, will give a special oriental dance.. The cast includes: Prologue, Wyland, Bob Plass; Rutherford, Lee Overen; Myra, Anita Kenne beck; Elizabeth, Janet Welch. Fresno Rites TULELAKE In a ceremony read at the Franciscan chapel in Fresno, California, on Saturday, March 8, Nadine Lambert, daughter of Mrs. William Lam bert of that city, became the bride of Neale Welsh, formerly of Tulelake. The bride, given in marriage by her uncle, Arthur Lambert of Fresno, chose for her wed ding a dressmaker suit of teal blue with a matching feather hat. Matron 6t honor was Mrs. Leon Doreen of Fresno, and bridesmaid was Natalie Welsh of Berkeley, sister of the groom. Best man was -Robert McCly monds of Tulelake, and ushers were Sherman Waldrip. also of Tulelake, Samuel Lonsdale and Leon Doreen of Fresno. Vows were exchanged before a fireplace banked with spring flowers and lighted tapers in candelabra. An informal recep tion followed the rites. The groom is the son of Dr. T. W. Welsh and Sara Welsh of Tulelake. Prior to entering the army in 1942 he attended Sac ramento Junior college. Mrs. Welsh went south for her son's wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Welsh will make their, home in Fresno. Ceremonfal A ceremonial of colorful pag eantry was presented Tuesday evening at the Masonic temple as the newly instituted' Naomi Shrine of the White Shrine of Jerusalem conferred the initia tory degree upon a class- of 11 candidates. Mrs. Wayne Henry of Salem, supreme district deputy, with her husband, were honored guests of the evening. Bethle hem Shrine of Eugene was rep resented by Mata B. Sweetman. A committee, with Mrs. Min nie Grizzle as chairman, served refreshments in the banquet room. A MARCH 26 AFFAIR will be the annual Sojourners' spring tea. Auxiliary MERRILL The auxiliary of the Merrill post, Veterans of Foreign Wars met last Thurs day night and installed the senior vice president, Ida Mae Fleck, and the junior vice pres ident, Deane Marks. The in stalling officer was Mrs. Irma- MRS. HENRY L. DAVID and her little daughter, Lauroliegh, of route 1, have recently returned from a visit in Colorado. Mrs. Stevenson is the former Shirley Mazier, daughter of Mrs. Vivian Wilson and Hurry Mazier of Klamath Fulls. .Mothers of the two. Mrs. Wil son and Mrs. Lloyd Stevenson, were hostesses. Walter Carruth crs of Mucdoel introduced those who participated in the pro gram, including Alice Carter, Don Hardin, Mrs. Floyd Mur ray, Joe Allen. Steve Eskildsen. Kenneth Holbrook. Mrs. Ed Young, Mrs. Cliff Tunnell. Joe Allen. Mrs. Walter Carrutherj and Hubert Oliver. Gifts were presented to the young couple and a buffet sup per served. Guests later enjoyed dancing. Merry Mixers The Merry Mixers club met at the home of Eleanor Curtis, 1335 Crescent, on the evening of March 6. Three tables of pi nochle were in play during the evening. Members present were Eleanor Robinson, Alberta Al len. Jo Panp. Louise Cramblet, Helen Griffith, Ruth Anderson, Ruth Lawrence, Eva Morcy, Nel lie McCormick, Billic Snider, Eleanor Curtis and one guest. Dorothv Derreh.
