Poyfe's Column Diehard Seminole Indians Turn Into Modern Cowboys FORT MYERS, Fla., March 20 (A) The old western same of cowboys -and -Indiana is being given a new twist by the "lost children of the Everglades" the Semlnoles. These Indians are playing cowboy. The tribe is going into the cat tle business Just like the pale faces. A foundation herd con tributed by the federal govern ment in 1937 has grown so that the tribe now has 2,400 Here fords on one reservation and 1.000 native cattle crossed with Brahma bulls on a second res ervation in the big cypress coun try. "Last year the two herds net ted $55,000 through the sale of steers and beef cattle," said K. A. Marmon, superintendent of the Seminole agency. Marmon hopes soon to spread cattle raising throughout the tribe on an individual basis by issuing small quantities of stock from the main tribal herds to heads of families. The families would turn back an equivalent number of cattle to the tribal herds after five years from the normal increase of their own herd. Precarious Liring Seminoles now earn a pre carious living in seasonal em ployment on vegetable farms and selling curios to tourists. Marmon hopes that cattle rais ing will give them their first chance to build a real economy and the .agency is training the Indians in herd management. They take to the cowboy like their ancestors did to firewater. "Most of the boys own their bwn saddle horses now," Mar mon said, "and they wear boots and spurs and neckerchiefs just like the western cowboys. But dungarees take the place of chaps and they wear straw as well as felt hats." After riding herd all day the boys like best to relax at night by watching a horse opera at the nearest movie. They would also like to read western story , magazines except that most can t read. There are an estimated 740 Seminoles in. Florida, descend ants of a tribe that is still tech nically at war with the United States. In 1832 the U. S. gov ernment began attempts to move the 5000-man Seminole tribe to reservations beyond the Missis sippi. When the army finally con cluded its bloody program, only Northern Division Hockey All Square SEATTLE, March 20 W The northern, division hockey play offs were all squared off today with Seattle and Portland to re new festivities in the Rose city tonight. aeaiue scored tne evener last vticrht with rall-AOT.Afl 1 n umph on the strong efforts of Goalie Freckles Little and the Seattle defense. Fort, comman dant of the thirteenth naval dis trict, inspected the ROTC unit at Oregon State college yester day and conferred with Presi dent A. L. Strand on establish ment of a naval reserve unit here to be composed of former navy men both in Corvallis and on the campus. Approximately 125 men have been signed for a local unit. Plans are to establish headquar ters at the Corvallis airport where buildings are available to house equipment. CB Un, Dainty Dimple ' 't 100 diehard uncaptured Semi noles were left alive in the re cesses of the Everglades. These fierce men and their off spring have entered into no formal compact with the U. S. government. It was reported that many who worked on WPA rolls and as wartime federal laborers insisted on being paid in cash instead of government check, feeling too many Indians had been tricked by the white man's paper promises. Marmon would like to bury the Indian war memories where they belong in the past. Citiiamhip "It's not good to tell the Semi noles or to have them read that they never signed a treaty with the United States." said the su perintendent, who is himself part Pueblo Indian. "The con gress outlawed further Indian treaties late in the last century and in 1924 passed a law auto matical y conferring citizenship upon all Indians born within the national borders. "So the Seminoles slowly in creasing in numbers are citi zens of Florida and the United States, a fact which Marmon said most white residents of the state, including many law en forcement officers, don't real ize." The cowpunching Indians thus can legally swagger up to the voting booths but they can't swagger up to bars and hook a spur over the rail. Citi zens or not. the old federal law against selling liquor to Indians still holds. Takes a lot of the fun out of playing cowboy, too. City Delivery Serrice.
